Who is Fethry Duck?
Fethry Duck made his comic debut in “The Health Nut”, published on August 2, 1964. Fethry is Donald Duck’s cousin who shows up to visit unexpectedly. Fethry is an obsessive New Age thinker, eagerly trying to pursue various new hobbies and lifestyles based on books he has read or TV programs he has seen. He wears a red hat because he read in a self-help book that convinced him that one’s head is healthier when it’s kept hot. So he is always shown wearing a red cap. In the original comic, Fethry is shown with more shaggy looking hair which later turned to more wiry hair. Often Fethry annoys everyone with his free thinking and eccentric behavior.
The early Fethry comics were created for the Disney Studio Program for publication outside of the United States. An exception to this are three stories with Fethry drawn by Tony Strobl that appeared in Gold Key Comics published in 1966 (Donald Duck #105 and #106 plus Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #304).
Fethry only appeared in European and Brazilian comic stories during the 1970s to the 1990s. In Brazil during the 1980s, Fethry had his own comic which lasted 56 issues. From 2003 to present, Edmont publishing has been poducing these comics in the United States under Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories.
In Brazilian and Italian stories, Fethry Duck has had various occupations such as a reporter and comic strip artist for Scrooge Mcduck’s newspaper, The Duckburg Chronicle. At one point Fethry wanted to be a super hero and created an alter ego, The Red Bat. He also had a girlfriend named Gloria, who is very hippie-like in style and she usually is a carefree girl. She appeared as one of Daisy Duck’s closest friends in some stories.
Don Rosa’s Duck family tree has him as a cousin of Donald Duck and Gladstone Gander. Fethry was not created by Carl Barks and was never used in any Barks stories. Therefor, Rosa does not consider Fethry part of the Duck family. It is believed that Rosa reluctantly included him in the tree anyway due to his popularity in Europe.
