Dynamite Comics The Muppets Noir #3 Review

A Muppetational Mystery

It’s a good time to be a Muppet fan. After the smashing success of The Muppet Show revival, a full series order seems all but inevitable. Meanwhile in the parks, while some of us are still lamenting the loss of Muppet*Vision 3D, Kermit and friends will be taking up residence as the new stars of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Indeed, we appear to be on the verge of a full Muppets renaissance.

Excellent timing aside, Muppets Noir feels like a dream project. Remember the clamor online when people suggested that the Muppets would make the perfect cast for the next Knives Out installment? (Editors Note: They absolutely would and I will die on this hill). The suggestion became so popular that director Rian Johnson has had to address it (and sadly shoot it down) on multiple occasions. Clearly, the Muppets are no stranger to mysteries (see: The Great Muppet Caper) and the appetite to see them partake in more is stronger than ever.

Muppets Noir takes this desire a step further, asking the question “What if the Muppets not only took on a mystery, but rather the whole genre that has defined them for decades?”  It’s certainly ambitious, and while the Muppets are always up to the task, it helps that they are being written and illustrated by Eisner Award-nominated Roger Langridge. Langridge’s prior work with the Muppet Show Comic Book is one of my favorite comicruns of all time, as he transitioned the Muppets from stage to page flawlessly.

Official Synopsis:

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT! While Kermit the Frog continues his concussed convalescence on The Muppet Theatre’s green room couch, his alter ego Flip Minnow, P.I., is about to catch a break in his missing persons case beyond the wall of sleep. A mysterious package delivered to his office turns out to be his quarry’s diary, which gives the amphibious investigator a new set of leads to run down — including a revelatory encounter inside a skee-ball speakeasy! Veteran comics puppeteer ROGER LANGRIDGE leads readers deeper into The Muppets’ collective unconscious in The Muppets Noir #3 — featuring intriguingly analytical covers from both the author and guest artists JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG!

Review

“The stuff (brick-induced) dreams are made of.”

Muppets Noir #3 is upon us! Does this installment answer any lingering questions? Not really. Does the penultimate issue show us where the case is heading? I’m not sure, honestly. Does this comic include 24 pages of talking shoes, a beloved king prawn, driving fish, and a detailed diagram of Crazy Harry’s alien pie conspiracy? Yes. Yes it does, and honestly, that’s worth the price of admission!

While Kermit the Frog’s alter ego, Detective Flip Minnow, may still be a step behind in his latest case, watching him start to put the clues together is still an absolute joy (Because if there’s anyone on this planet worth rooting for – its Kermit the Frog). Detective Minnow’s latest lead has him visiting new locations and meeting with more familiar faces. Certain developments will even have you wanting to flip back and examine the previous two issues, so have those ready as well!

Issue 3 includes more noir-style staples such as shady deals down by the docks and an abandoned business posing as a front for illicit activities. Watching Roger Langridge weave these elements into his tale and maneuver around them with Muppet charm continues to be utterly delightful.

The quality of the first two issues continues here, as the writing, illustration, and deliberate use of color are just as sharp.

Muppet humor and noir mysteries do have one thing in common: Nothing is as it first seems, and nothing ends quite the way you think it will. While I genuinely have no idea how it’s all going to come together in the end, I fully trust Roger Langridge to get us there.

Oh, and I trust the Muppets too. If anyone can bring this topsy-turvy mystery to a satisfying conclusion, it’s the Muppets: Pulling together an amazing final act is kind of their thing!

The Muppets Noir is a Muppetational Mystery!
