Fantagraphics TaleSpin: Flight of the Sky-Raker: Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 2 Review

Spin it! Fantagraphics is bringing us a Disney Afternoon in Vol. 2 of their Disney Afternoon Adventure book series. This series hooks up nostalgia to our veins in the form of the collection of comics from the Disney Adventures magazine as well as early 90s Disney comics starring characters from our favorite Disney Afternoon shows.

Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 1 was released in the summer of 2020 and featured the daring duck of mystery, Darkwing Duck, on the cover. It was definitely one of my favorite books released by Fantagraphics that year. Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 2 features everyone’s favorite pilot Bear, Baloo, from TaleSpin.

Review

Let’s begin it. Bear ‘n grin it! Spin it!

Like the Disney Afternoon block of cartoons, we get a solid block of Disney comics featuring the beloved characters from the Disney Afternooniverse. Baloo is on the cover and TaleSpin gets the most featured stories with four of the thirteen stories in this volume. Three of the TaleSpin stories are from issues #1, 2, and 7 of the Disney Comics TaleSpin series from 1991. The TaleSpin story from issue #7, “Long Flight Home”, goes into Kit Cloudkicker’s back story. I would love to see the stories from the remaining four issues of that comic series as well as the four issue TaleSpin comic mini-series get released in future Disney Afternoon Adventures volumes from Fantagraphics.

The stories from Adventures of the Gummi Bears come from a magazine in Brazil. They are appearing in English for the first time. Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 1 also included some rare Adventures of the Gummi Bears from Brazil.

“For the Love of Cheese” is from the 1990/1991 Disney Comics Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers series issue #17. The Launchpad McQuack one pager “Shake” was originally published in a Swedish magazine and then republished in Uncle Scrooge #352.

The rest of the charming and funny comic stories are from the pages of Disney Adventures. The two Darkwing Duck stories were very dangerous and enjoyable. All of these stories brought back great memories from the 90s when I had a Disney Adventures subscription. I look forward to the next Disney Afternoon Adventures volume from Fantagraphics later this year, and I really hope that this series full of Disney Afternooniverse fun continues for many years.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Thank you to Fantagraphics for allowing us to go through this nostalgic Disney Afternooniverse journey.

  1. Wait, this volume is out already? I thought it had been pushed back to April, according to the PREVIEWS catalog. But if it’s out now, that’s great!

I’m also surprised to see there’s a Timon & Pumbaa story here. I thought for sure they wouldn’t be able to include T&P or Aladdin in this series due to Dark Horse having their licenses when the first volume came up. Maybe the Lion King license moving to Dynamite has shaken things up a bit? If so, maybe a future volume can include Aladdin’s “Junior Disaster” two-parter (and maybe also Bonkers’ “Whale of a Tale”, which guest-starred Monstro the whale). Although speaking of Dynamite, I would assume the lack of Gargoyles here has to do with Dynamite’s upcoming omnibus of the Marvel Gargoyles comic. But then again, both Dynamite and Fantagraphics are reprinting 1990s Darkwing comics…
