Fantagraphics is releasing a new Mickey Mouse adventure by French cartoonist and Disney animator, Régis Loisel. Régis won the Angouleme International Comics Festival’s Grand Prize in 2006. The new story, which is titled Zombie Coffee, pays tribute to the early Mickey daily serial comic strips of the 1930s by Disney legend, Floyd Gottfredson. The book has been translated to English by David Gerstein.
The presentation of this deluxe hardcover book is in landscape format to further honor the daily comic strip style of the story and artwork. It would look great on the shelf next to all of the Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse collection by Fantagraphics which catalogs Floyd Gottfredson’s Mickey Mouse comic strips. A slipcover in portrait format is also included in this book’s release in case you want to display the book vertically next to your Fantagraphics Disney Masters book collection.
Official Story Description:
Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Horace Horsecollar, and Clarabelle Cow go camping to forget the Great Depression. But when they return to Mouseton, they find shady real-estate developer Rock Fuller destroying it to build a golf course… with the help of an army of “zombies,” transformed from normal citizens with a magic drink! What does Mickey’s old enemy Pegleg Pete have to do with this evil scheme… and can Mickey trip it up?
It was great to read a new Mickey Mouse adventure in Floyd Gottfredson’s serial comic strip style. Mickey Mouse: Zombie Coffee is 80 pages of colorful gorgeous art. Régis Loisel did an amazing job of giving this new story a nostalgic early Mickey Mouse comics feel.
I am not really a coffee guy, but Régis Loisel had me at zombies. The zombies in this story are not hungry for brains, but they are hungry for doing the bidding of their employer, Rock Fuller. Rock wants them to work non stop and then hand their paycheck back over to him when they are done. This is a pretty villainous act during the Great Depression in which this story takes place. Pegleg Pete and Sebastian are Rock Fuller’s main accomplices in this evil plan which only Mickey Mouse and Horace Horsecollar can foil.
Mickey Mouse: Zombie Coffee was provided to me for review from our friends at Fantagraphics. All opinions are my own.
