Life Day is a holiday tradition in the Star Wars universe that celebrates the value and tenets of the Wookies. On Light Day, the Wookies on Kashyyyk pay homage to an ancient tree that they believed gave life to the universe. The holiday was first introduced in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special which aired on CBS on November 17th, 1978. Boba Fett made his very first Star Wars appearance in an animated segment from that show. The animated segment was recently released on Disney+ this year. Hopefully, the full Star Wars Holiday Special will be released on Disney+ in the future.
Insight Editions released a Star Wars The Life Day Cookbook for families to celebrate some traditional Life Day food, drinks, and activities at home.
You don’t have to be at the Tree of Life on Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day. Star Wars The Life Day Cookbook is 128 pages featuring 50 recipes and crafts for Star Wars fans to honor this most sacred holiday at home. The recipes are made for all skill levels and feature food and drinks from several Star Wars planets that you know including Kashyyyk, Endor, Mon Cala, Alderaan, and beyond.
The recipes are gathered together by Chef Strono Tuggs or “Cookie”. Chef Strono Tuggs was head chef for Maz Kanata’s Castle on Takodana. Maz’s Castle was destroyed by the First Order in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The chef’s journey eventually led him to Batuu where he learned all about Life Day from travelers.
The book is organized into the following sections:
- Appetizers and Snacks
- Side Dishes
- Main Courses
- Desserts
- Drinks
- How to Celebrate Life Day at Home
Each of the recipes includes a side story from Chef Strono Tuggs which adds a dash of Star Wars character to the dish. I would love to see some of these Life Day food offerings on Batuu at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. I could dream of a Life Day food festival at the Disney Paks, but in the meantime, I can use this cookbook at home.
There are pictures for the majority of the Life Day recipe creations. The pictures definitely make the food look like it is from another galaxy and also delicious. I am more likely to be inspired to create the dishes from this book that have pictures to go along with the recipes. Unfortunately, not every recipe has a picture for inspiration and a guide.
I love desserts and drinks. The Jelly Life Day Orbs, Klatooine Crepes, Wookiee-Ookiees, Kashyyyk Cake, Jogan Friit Parfait, and Kabatha Crisps dessert recipe speak to me and have my name all over them for desserts that I would like to try and make. The Bantha Milk Hot Chocolate recipe will allow me to make my own blue milk hot chocolate at home.
The celebrate Life Day at home ideas including in this book are Life Day Ornament Orbs, Tree of Life, Life Day Robes, and Wookiee-Ookiee Salt Dough Ornaments. The Star Wars Life Day Cookbook definitely makes throwing the perfect Life Day themed holiday party achievable.
A big thanks to Insight Editions for allowing me to check out this cookbook from a galaxy far, far away.
