Fantagraphics Disney Masters Vol 1: The Delta Dimension Review

Disney Masters

Fantagraphics launched the Disney Masters Series with Vol. 1: The Delta Dimension in May 2018. Since then they have published a few new volumes in the Disney Masters series each year. Volumes have been alternating between the central character and story being Mickey Mouse related or Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge.

Fantagraphics presents Disney Masters – acclaimed artists from around the world working in the grand Walt Disney tradition. Many of these stories are new to American readers and appear here for the first time in English. Fresh new artwork, fresh new adventures, and fresh new laughs!

Disney Masters Vol. 1: Mickey Mouse: The Delta Dimension

Book Description:

Mickey has to discover the mystery of the strange glowing snow in this new series highlighting classic comic book creators.

When Mickey’s town is hit by a blizzard of strange glowing snow, everyone thinks it’s a publicity stunt. But genius Dr. Einmug knows better: Pegleg Pete is on the loose with Einmug’s weather-control secrets! Only Mickey and Einmug’s mysterious companion ― the odd little Atomo Bleep-Bleep ― can save the day before a poison rainstorm wipes Mouseton off the map! Romano Scarpa (1927–2005) took over for Floyd Gottfreson and spun out decades’ worth of new Mickey action epics ― most of which have never been available in English! This volume also reunites Mickey, Atomo, and Pete for Scarpa’s “The Bleep-Bleep 15″ and “The Fabulous Kingdom of Shan-Grilla,” two internationally famous tales making their North American debut! Full-color illustrations throughout.

Included Stories

There are 3 stories included in Disney Masters Vol. 1:

  • Mickey Mouse in the Delta Dimension
  • The Bleep-Bleep 15
  • The Fabulous City of Shan-Grilla

In Mickey Mouse in the Delta Dimension, Mouseton is plagued by snow which is transformed into cotton candy and later glowing snow. Which reminds me, never eat glowing snow. Mickey Mouse is on the case to investigate the strange occurrences that further threaten the citizens of Mouseton when the source of the mysterious snow blackmails the town for money. The next planned snow event by the blackmailer will be acid snow. Mickey partners up with his new friend Atomo Bleep-Bleep from the Delta Dimension to solve the mystery and save Mouseton.

In the next story, Atomo Bleep-Bleep invents a photonic pocket rocket that he names The Bleep-Bleep 15. The toy has the power to steal the gravity and momentum from any object that it hits. Atomo’s invention soon becomes in high demand. Atomo is kidnapped by a sinister person who has done battle with both Atomo and Mickey before. That person wants Atomo to build full size Bleep-Bleep 15s to be sold the the highest bidders. It is up to Mickey to save his friend.

When Minnie notices her first wrinkle, she obsesses over visiting The Fabulous City of Shan-Grilla. Shan-Grilla is a fabled city of peace and eternal youth. Minnie gets her wish as she is mousenapped to Shan-Grilla. Mickey mysteriously receives his own invitation to Shan-Grilla when an advertisement in a newspaper gives him instructions to follow. Did I mention that Pete had accidentally found his way into Shan-Grilla, and the citizens think he is their new leader. It is up to Mickey, an author who wrote a book about the city, and a stowaway (Pete’s girlfriend Trudy) to save the paradise city and Minnie. Will Minnie’s wrinkle disappear? You are going to have to read the story to find out.

Final Thoughts

I originally slept on the Mickey Mouse Disney Masters volumes from Fantagraphics as my goal was to master all of the even numbered Duck volumes in the series. That was a mistake as the Mickey volumes are also full of comic gems of entertainment and mastery. Through reading the Disney Masters series I have been able to educate myself on some of the great works of Romano Scarpa. Disney Masters Volume 8 and 17 also focus on more of Romano Scarpa’s great work. This book is volume 1 of the Disney Masters collection, and it is a great place to start on your reading journey.

I love the Disney Masters series because we get treated to stories and illustrations from more great Disney comic creators besides the legendary Barks and Rosa. We may have never had a chance to read these stories outside of Fantagraphics’ Disney Masters series.

I am definitely looking forward to reading future volumes of Fantagraphics’ Disney Masters series.
