Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 1 Fantagraphics Book Coming in 2021

We all need something to look forward to in 2021 to put 2020 behind us. Thanks to a link showing up on Amazon as well as a heads up from our friend and DuckTalks comic historian, Dan Cunningham (You can follow Dan on Twitter, here.), we now know about an amazing Disney Afternoon book coming from Fantagraphics tentatively scheduled for a next summer release.

Step right up and come on in
Here’s where the fun begins

Fantagraphics will be releasing Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 1 on June 22, 2021. When I heard this news my head almost exploded from excitement as our favorite publisher as well as a sponsor of our podcast, Fantagraphics, is publishing Disney Afternoon specific content.

Disney Adventures was the magazine for Disney kids and adults of the Disney Afternoon era. In fact the magazine was advertised as the official publication of the Disney Afternoon. If you wanted to be part of the cool kids club, than you had a subscription or you picked up each individual issue at the checkout counter which was available at pretty much every store. The first issue of Disney Adventures magazine released on November 12, 1990 featured Rick Moranis and TaleSpin Baloo. An issue #0 featured DuckTales characters being chased by a rhino. The Disney Adventures magazine was published from 1990 to 2007. You can see a complete photo gallery of all of the iconic covers on The Disney Wiki.

Comics were a regularly featured section of the publication during the early years. Some of the earlier comics have been reprinted in the Disney’s Colossal Comics Collection, but those collected editions are pretty rare and go for high values on the secondary market.

It is very exciting that Fantagraphics will be republishing collected editions of this comic for all of us to enjoy. All Fantagraphics releases that I have read so far have been well taken care of comprehensive releases of the source material. They often feature bonus sections with additonial material, and you can really tell that the people who work on the books care about the product and go the extra mile to make the books special for the readers.

Here is what we know so far will be included in Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 1. Also, this is volume 1 meaning that this is a new series. How freaking exciting is that!

Here’s where the fun begins: awesome 1980s and 1990s comics based on the classic Disney Afternoon TV cartoons! From the pages of Disney Adventures and its sister magazines come much-requested feature-length thrillers! In “Just Us Justice Ducks,” Darkwing Duck and DuckTales’ Gizmoduck are called to action when the Fearsome Five ― Negaduck, Megavolt, Liquidator, Bushroot, and Quackerjack ― successfully take over St. Canard! Then Goofy and Max take a trip on the open road… far from Max’s beloved Roxanne, but into the clutches of a Bigfoot in the original comics adaptation of A Goofy Movie! Then in “The Legend of the Chaos God,” an evil spirit named Solego is trapped in a priceless gem… and wreaks havoc on Cape Suzette, Duckburg, and St. Canard. It’s up to the Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Scrooge McDuck, Darkwing, and the TaleSpin crew to stop him! “…Everybody’s busy, bringing you a Disney Afternoon!”

Pop culture writers and children’s authors David Cody Weiss and Bobbi JG Weiss, featured in this volume, have scribed hundreds of books and comics featuring Disney, Warner Bros., and DreamWorks properties. In the early 1990s, they were also two of the most prolific talents in Disney Adventures magazine’s beloved early days. Full-color illustrations throughout.

So from that description above, we know that we will be getting a comic adaptation of the classic Darkwing Duck episode “Just Us Justice Ducks”, “A Goofy Movie” comic adaptation, and “The Legend of the Chaos God.” “The Legend of the Chaos God” is exciting because it was a five part comic that crossed over between five different Disney Afternoon properties.

We still have to get to next summer for the release of the book, but we could not be more thrilled that this new book series is being released by Fantagraphics. If you are as excited as we are, you can use the preorder link below to secure a copy.

  1. So… I did math; on the weekend, not in school.

Negaduck, in the original Darkwing Duck…

Is playing Darkwing Duck in the premirere.

It seems intresting. I can tell you Ducktales has something to do with school.

    getepic.com/app/ is my school thing.

  2. The inclusion of “The Legend of the Chaos God” is easily the best part of this announcement. That’s one of quite a few comics I’ve been wanting to see collected in graphic novel form for years. In fact, I think they should’ve made it the cover story for this volume.

The inclusion of the Goofy Movie comic is good news too, since it’s never been published in the States before. This means future volumes might include other Disney Afternoon comics that never made it to the US, like that one Rescue Rangers comic that almost got serialized in Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories.

    • I thought this release was cool. Until we discussed it last night in our latest podcast recording and now it is the only thing Incan think about!

Pirate has a great theory on how “The Legend of the Chaos God” could impact DuckTales season 3 or maybe even 4!
