Season Two of DuckTales has officially ended and we are now in the show’s… what, like… fifth or sixth hiatus? When season three was announced at the beginning of the year that announcement stated that the show would return in 2019.
Or course that was before the mid-season’s… second hiatus… is that right (?) that appears to have impacted the release of merchandise for the show. As we neared the end of season two Frank Angones, Co-Producer Of DuckTales, responded on Tumblr to a question about the next hiatus.
The first episode!? This response began to support what we were already beginning to consider for season three. If the producers were just now in late August or early September receiving the animation for the first episode… could there be any chance we would see season three in 2019?
Of course the discourse ramped up after this post, and people within the fandom were asking Frank to give any indication of when we should expect season three.
Oh that binge strategy… the bane of Duck podcasts! I love getting a lot of DuckTales stories at one time, but the “binge strategy” makes it very difficult for your favorite DuckTales podcasts to keep up. We go weeks without episodes to discuss and then BOOM! more content than we can cover. Haha… but 😡
I’m not really mad. We get together once a week (most of the time) to discuss the latest episode, news, merchandise, and fan discussion because we love the show and enjoy interacting with our fellow fans. With or without new episodes we really do enjoy doing the podcast. Of course it would be easier to do that if the episodes came out once a week with one break between seasons, but the Disney Channel must have data proving their content thrives off these binge blocks of programming because DuckTales is not the only show they are doing this with.
We know they received the one episode, but here Frank says they need ten before the episodes will begin airing… We do not know the turn around time for nine more episodes… but it looks like we’ve soared well past October and into 2020 at this point.
The good news? Well, the good news is that season three is coming and that the show will experience even greater exposure once it is available on Disney’s new streaming service in November, Disney+. We expect new fans (slightly aged and younger) to find the show for the first time, and we as a community need to be prepared to welcome them with open arms.
Many will meet the family for the first time, and experience the mysteries, betrayals, and heart-warming moments without the disruption of hiatuses or episode shuffling. They will begin looking for the subsections of the community they connect with, and they will find a diversity of fan-made content to welcome them. If we want a season four (or dare I say five!?) the rest of 2019 is very important to the show and your involvement can impact how much DuckTales we get moving forward.
After the season finale aired Frank was hit with a barrage of questions from fans. He’s the type of guy who understands fans, and he was gracious enough to try to answer as many questions as possible. He did so with a larger Q/A Tumblr response than we normally see. In those answers he added this about the upcoming hiatus.
That settles it folks. We are in for another long hiatus, for the time being. We know this info is disheartening to many, but we have a lot to look forward to in season three. Over the next few weeks DuckTalks will be covering news (hopefully including some merchandise news) and reviewing the episodes that aired in the last episode bomb (including the season finale). We hope to do some fun things along the way. We’ve received approvals from Disney to speak with some people on the show during the hiatus, we’ve gained commitments from other Disney Afternoon legacy talent who will share more behind the scenes info of our favorite shows, we have new content coming for some products that are coming, and we will probably dive into some of the content on Disney+!
We, as a fandom, have control over the content for Disney DuckFans over the next few months. There are amazing artists, writers, cartoonist, creators, theorists, and etc. who can step up and fill that void created by this hiatus.
Lastly, some words from Frank on how the community should treat one another. We are all different and that can make fandom fun when we respect one another. We all have favorite characters, shows, creative outlets, and even ships. Just because we disagree on something doesn’t make us enemies. We can all come together under the umbrella of the one thing we have in common, and celebrate that one thing. I think Frank said it better, so I’ll just insert that quote.
We hope the hiatus ends with an even larger DuckTales fandom eagerly awaiting that season three premiere.

I think that Wave 2 would need to be planned out better than Wave 1 to secceed. Wave 1 had; To many of Launchpad and Glomgold made, not enough Scrooge and Donald made, a poor release (no release date, appeared randomly), and felt £1 or £2 overpriced. Hopefully this is fixed because I still want Della Duck in my collection. Also, if it was canned, Funko’s Disney Afternoon Line might get a Wave 3 still.

Do most toy lines have release dates? Or is that mostly the collectible figures?
There were definitely too many Glomgold’s and LPs. I think for LP it was mostly because of the Sunchasher coming with a figure. Glomgold wasn’t my favorite mold.
I felt that the quality of the rest was very good. I’ve compared my PhatMojo LP to my Funko and the PhatMojo figure appears to be a superior figure. I’ve had a lot of quality issues with Funko Disney Afternoon figures though.
I think PM could knock it out of the park with Wave 2, and I hope to hear from them soon!

I don’t know how many toys lines have release dates, however most DuckMerch (other than the Disney Plushes) had release dates. Funko’s DA Line has December 2017 for wave 1, and same for wave 2 + HD&L. The LEGO figures had May 1st, DuckTales’ Funko pops had August 2017, and June 2019, and most other Merch (clothes, backpacks, etc) all got them.
The quality for my PM figures were… 50/50. My Huey figure had scratched eyes NIB, and my Louie’s hoodie was off we’re the main part and the and the arms were diff colours. At the same time, my Luanchpad and Scrooge figures are near perfect.
I think that is the paint issue was fixed on the Action Figures (the PVCs were also mixed but there all one mold), and with a proper date or even just a month, they would sell a lot better without being 50% off.

I reached out to Phatmojo at recieved a response. The second wave is Indifinently on hold, the first wave received a good response but Wave 2 hasn’t gotten the same amount of critical interest. There’s a hoped limited release of the wave soon. Hopefully this is the case as opposed to cancellation.

You’ve done better than us. They’ve been silent for months. I wonder what the critical interest is? We haven’t officially seen anything from them, so it can’t be that people haven’t shown interest in the figures. We get messages asking if we’ve heard anything a few times each week.

Might have been me directly contacting a Director of the company, I found there Email in an old ToyFair announcement. Anyway, I think critical interest could also be Target not wanting to purchase more stock since LP and Glom didn’t sell well, although I doubt it. It also might be that very few people seem to publicly bring up Wave. (I’ve seen very few bring it up). In a different note, a Limited/Exclusive release might not be bad. Say they make them Super Target exclusives or something, wouldn’t be that hard to find them.

Hi Dylan Duck, has Shawn McCarthy (CEO of PhatMojo) had given you any estimate when the Wave 2 Limited Exclusive is going to be released? Let’s say October, November??
Besides, it is not true people don’t want wave 2 – it is rather retailer problem because they have bought too much LPs and FGs and they just cannot sell. If possible, can you forward this info to him – people want wave 2 so much – if retailer negotiations falls, can we bought already manufactured figures directly from him, please?

Update Update: (if it’s possible, delete my last comment) I misread the Email, they’ll know what they’re gonna do in the coming weeks, not them releasing (unfortunately). I still think that if we get Wave 2 it’ll be before 2019 ends, or January 2020. I doubt we’ll see a Wave 3 with how bumpy Wave 2 is going.

So if I understood correctly, in the following weeks PM shall be clear if they are releasing the Wave 2 as limited exclusive edition or it is totally cancelled, right?
And then we still shall allow couple of weeks more to get the release.

Thanks very much for reaching out. The second wave is on hold indefinitely. We had a great response to the first wave but haven’t yet reached critical mass interest on the second wave.
We hope to have some limited release of the items and will keep you posted.

I’ve spoken with A couple of people by email this weekend, and I am hearing the same thing. It is likely we see a limited release this year, and if it does well enough it may initiat the “critical interest” that would lead to wave 2 being released sometime in 2020.

That’s what we are going to do for now. One at a time. We also have some other things cooking. In November our childhood favorites will be available on Disney+. We plan on making the most out of the hiatus.
