We’ve reported on this a couple of times already. We found out through IDW’s Solicitations that The Disney Afternoon Giant #1 was coming in October. Disney Afternoon Giant #1 Coming! The description of the comic had us very excited for a new collection of comics covering stories from our favorite Disney Afternoon characters.
Disney Afternoon Giant #1—Cover A: James Silvani

It’s the first issue of a brand-new series featuring stories from your favorite Disney Afternoon shows! It’s a blast from the past in the present as we feature classic DuckTales, Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duckstories, all together in one place for the first time in many years!
FC • 48 pages • $5.99
Less than a week later some discussion online revealed that the new series may be a collection of reprints from the Boom! Studios era of the Disney Afternoon. The Disney Afternoon Giant #1 May Be Reprinted Comics?!
I didn’t know about these comics when they were released in 2011. It was a few years later when I found out about the Darkwing Duck comic coming out by JoeBooks that I found out about the other series. I’ve heard mixed reactions about these comics, but they have been on my list of comics to pick up… The only problem is that they are very expensive on the secondary market now.
With December’s solicitations we now know more about this series based on the description of issue #2, and it confirms our suspicions.
Disney Afternoon Giant #2
Ian Brill and Warren Spector • Leonel Castellani, José Massaroli, and Magic Eye Studio (a) • Leonel Castellani (c)
Our brand-new series continues with two second chapters as we present part two of Chip ’n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers’ “Worldwide Rescue”and part two of DuckTales’ “Rightful Owners!”
FC • 48 pages • $5.99
There should be no doubt these are the Rescue Ranger and DuckTales’ comics from Boom! Studios. The first story for Rescue Rangers was a 4-parter titled “Worldwide Rescue” and “Rightful Owners” was a 4-parter for the DuckTales comic. Rescue Rangers only had 8 issues published and DuckTales only had six before Disney pulled the license.
The DuckTales’ stories are considered especially controversial. The second, and final, story arc was part of a crossover with Boom! Studios’ Darkwing Duck comic. The comics were released without Disney’s approval! When JoeBooks reprinted the Darkwing Duck series in the “Definitively Dangerous Edition” they were left out. It is doubtful that Disney will allow IDW to print those issues, but I for one would love an opportunity to read them.
Hopefully Disney Afternoon Giant sells well and IDW considers reprinting some of the 90s comics… or better yet they hire some of our favorite creators to start writing new Disney Afternoon stories. For a couple of years I’ve said I would love to have a Disney Afternoon book that rotates creative teams and franchises from within the Disney Afternoon.
