IDW DuckTales #9 Review!

Issue #9 of DuckTales may be a little late, but we think it was worth a little wait. It has been confirmed that the DuckTales comic took a break last month because it needed the show to catch up to it’s storyline. We still have a story from issue #8 that hasn’t seen print.

Like the last issue, this issue has some problems. The stories from the description are not the stories in this comic. It seems the shuffling around continues to impact the book. DuckTales #9 includes two great stories that continues to focus on Scrooge. Story A is “The Risk McDuck Refused!” and Story B is “The Frightful Family Fishing Trip!”

Story A tells another tale of Scrooge attempting to defy time. This time by traveling to his favorite time period. The issue opens with a great homage to the classic cartoon’s title sequence. I particularly enjoyed a gag about Scrooge refusing to pay royalties on a particular song that the reader should be familiar with.

In Story B Donald has an opportunity to shine. The story may remind you of the earlier pre-DuckTales stories that we had when this series began. There is an argument about Della, and Beakley has to stop the arguing (one of my favorite Beakley moments so far)! It took me a minute to determine if the Beagle Boys in this story were the classics (Big Time, Burger, and Bouncer), and I was shocked that Burger get’s more dialogue on one page than he has had in the first half of season one of DuckTales!

I love these comics because they provide the reader greater insight into characters. For example, in Story A we learn just how much Scrooge loves his newly found family, and in Story B we better understand how much the circumstances of Della’s disappearance bothers Scrooge.

I still contend this comic keeps getting better, and these stories were a fun read. I hope you pick them up and enjoy them. While you are at it, why don’t you grab an extra copy to introduce someone new to comics.
