We have Duck Merch…woo-oo! What an exciting time that we are living in which there is so much new merchandise featuring the characters from the Disney Afternoon. Funko knocked it out of the park in 2017 with its Disney Afternoon line of POP!, Pocket POP! Keychains, Mystery Minis, and Action Figures.
This weekend is the 2018 Toy Fair convention in New York. This annual event allows companies to showcase some of their toys and collectibles that will be released throughout the year. There have been no new Funko announcements regarding Disney Afternoon releases, but we did find out that PhatMojo will be releasing toys featuring DuckTales (2017) this year. This will be our first opportunity to have toys from the new DuckTales reboot as all of the DuckTales merchandise released last year was for the classic DuckTales series. We look forward to more information on the PhatMojo releases as that information becomes available.
In honor of Toy Fair week, we wanted to showcase some of the products from our collections. I recently picked up the set of classic Disney Afternoon action figures that Funko released in December 2017. Boy did these figures not disappoint. The following characters are featured in this first wave release of Disney Afternoon Action Figures from Funko: Scrooge McDuck (Ducktales), Chip (Rescue Rangers), Dale and Zipper (Rescue Rangers), Baloo (TaleSpin), Darkwing Duck (Darkwing Duck), Negatron (Darkwing Duck). We will put out a blog post that will review and detail each one of these extraordinary figures.
Today’s action figure review is Scrooge McDuck.
The Box Art
The first thing you will notice about the Scrooge McDuck action figure, as well as all of the Disney Afternoon figures in this collection, is that it has amazing box art. This often creates a dilemma for toy collectors as to whether or not to keep the collectible in the package or open it for display. I am an out of box guy, but I could definitely not disagree with collectors who will want to keep the figure in the packaging. Some collectors even purchase two figures to display one in box and one out of box. Let us know if you are a display in the box or out of box collector. The box art features Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie in a mine cart from the classic DuckTales episode “Earth Quack”. “Earth Quack” is the twenty-ninth episode from DuckTales season 1. The episode originally aired October 22, 1987, and it is based on the Carl Barks comic story Land Beneath the Ground! This episode feature the Terra-firmians which made their DuckTales (2017) appearance in the episode Terror of the Terra-firmians.
The back of the box has a disclaimer that the toy is not recommended for ages 0-3. This is because Scrooge McDuck comes with two small accessories: Scrooge’s cane and money bag.
This quality figure really is a work of art. It has eight points of articulation including head, waist, arms, elbows, and legs for high pose ability and movement. I did not have any issues getting the figure to stand on its own holding the two accessories. Paint jobs on my toys/collectibles are a big deal to me, and I had no complaints with this figure. This is classic DuckTales Scrooge McDuck so he is wearing his blue suit instead of the red one that he wears in the 2017 reboot. You can definitely notice and appreciate the detail that went into this figure. The two accessories of Scrooge’s cane and money bag are nice touches. Scrooge’s glasses are an excellent detail with translucent plastic.
This is the fourth classic DuckTales Scrooge McDuck figure that was released by Funko last year. The other three releases were POP!, Pocket POP! Keychain, and Mystery Mini. Here is a side by side comparison of those four figures.
It is the sixth release if you count the two swimming in money bin figures, but we will talk about those two in a future blog entry.
I had a custom DuckTales sign made to display with my figures.
I highly recommend that you buy this figure as it is a great addition to any DuckTales or Disney Afternoon fan’s collection. This is the figure that I dreamed to own in the late 80s/early 90s. I really hope that these figures sell well so that more characters can get added in the future. Personally, I would love to see Funko add Scrooge McDuck’s arch rival Glomgold as Glomgold has not had that many merch opportunities. Which character would you like to see Funko add to this series of Disney Afternoon action figures from DuckTales?
Where to Buy?
I have seen this figure range in price from $9.99-$12.99.
Scrooge McDuck Funko action figure can be purchased in several online retailers and in stores. Some of the stores that I have personally seen this Scrooge figure include GameStop, Hot Topic, and ThinkGeek.
