Marvel What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four Review

Marvel has shown us What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine and Thor along with What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel. Now we will get to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy become Marvel’s First Family in What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four.

The story in this issue is written by Steve Behling (plot) and Riccardo Secchi (script) and illustrated by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. The covers are done by artists Lorenzo Pastrovicchio, Nick Bradshaw, Phil Noto, Chrissie Zullo, and Skottie Young. I opted to add the Lorenzo Pastrovicchio and Skottie Young covers to my collection.

The main cover by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio is a tribute to Jack Kirby’s cover of Fantastic Four: The Lost Adventure #1 (2008).

The classic Disney characters in this issue include Mickey Mouse as Mr. Fantastic, Minnie Mouse as The Invisible Woman, Donald Duck as the Thing, Goofy as The Human Torch, Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, Gyro Gearloose, Grandma Duck, and Pete as Mole Pete. The Terryfermians from DuckTales also join the cast of characters.

The story inside this issue is titled “The Fantastic Four vs. Mole Pete”. The Moleman was the first villain that Marvel’s First Family ever went up against. The number 4 appears in the sky above Duckburg. This is the signal four our four heroes to assemble. Minnie as Sue Storm turns invisible and runs out of her friend Clarabelle’s house. Donald as the Thing smashes frustratingly through a door as he can never find a shirt that he doesn’t destroy. Goofy turns into the Human Torch, and barely makes it to the tower as he gets low on flame power after making a stop to light barbecue pits for a competition. Mickey as Mr. Fantastic stretches to saves Goofy during his fall from the sky as the team of four are reunited.

We get an origin story flashback of how Mickey and his friends got their powers from a failed cosmic ray experiment by Gyro Gearloose. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are hit by comic rays while they were on a spinning rocket ride at an amusement park.

The hero team set off to investigate mysterious events it’s and earthquakes that are appearing all over town. Inside the deep underground pits, they discover monsters, Terryfermians, and Mole Pete. Mole Pete tells his origin story on how he fell down a pit while running from the cops after stealing Gyro’s hand stereo. The songs from the stereo tamed the monsters and the Terryfermians made Mole Pete their leader. Pete used the Terryfermians for his revenge against all of the people above who humiliated him. The Terryfermians caused earthquakes that would suck in the pawn shop, bank, restaurant, and jail. Mole Pete commands the underground monsters to attack the Fantastic Four. The Terryfermians turn on Pete and assist them in defeating the monsters. Mickey and Friends first adventure as the Fantastic Four was a success as they were able to defeat Mole Pete.

This issue’s story elements are a tribute to Fantastic Four #1 (1961). What If…? Mickey and Friends was another great Disney and Marvel mashup that I feel both Disney and Marvel fandoms will love. This is a well timed comic to get Disney fans pumped for the Fantastic Four movie releasing this summer. Donald Duck as the Thing is also perfect casting. I am really enjoying all of these Disney Marvel mashup tribute comics.

What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four retails for $4.99 and the story is twenty five pages in length. There is also some bonus content at the back of the book. We get a letter from the Senior Editor, Mark Paniccia, about Fantastic Friends! We get some concept art for the character designs of Mickey Fantastic, Minnie Invisble, Donald Thing, and Goofy Torch. The final page in the issue is an ad for the next big Disney Marvel mashup release, “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became Avengers”. If a collector’s edition release is ever made, I would love to see a cover gallery for each issue. A side by side reference guide of the classic covers that gave the cover artists their inspiration for the What If…? covers would also be marvelous.

After two years of amazing Marvel and Disney mashup variant covers for Marvel’s Amazing Spider-man series and now the Fantastic Four series, Disney fans finally get to enjoy some full issues with “Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime”, “What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine”, “What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor”, “What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel”, and now “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four”.

A big thanks to Marvel for sending me an advanced copy of the issue for this review. What Disney/ Marvel mashup will we get next? In March, we will find out “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Avengers”.
