We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles.

I love holiday content from my favorite shows and comic series. This is the second holiday special comic from Dynamite Comics and Gargoyles. We got treated to an outstanding Halloween Gargoyles story last year. This time Greg Weisman and Nate Cosby are taking us on a winter wonderland tale starring everyone’s favorite good Gargoyle doggie, Bronx. Nate Cosby usually sits in the editor and packaging chair for these Dynamite Disney comic series, but this time he is living his best Gargoyles life dream by penning the script and working on the plot with Gargoyles legend Greg Weisman. The best holiday gift of all is that George Kambadais is back to illustrate this special comic. George masterfully illustrated the twelve issue Gargoyles series that Dynamite launched in December 2022. I love his art style. Kambadais followed up his work on the Gargoyles series with another Disney action packed series in Dynamite Comics Hercules. Everyone’s favorite letterer, Jeff Eckleberry, is back to make sure that everyone can read all of the sound effects and grunts from our hero Gargoyle, Bronx. The colors by JP Jordan definitely gave the comic that winter feeling. This could easily be a holiday episode of the classic Gargoyles animated show.

Gargoyles Winter Special #1 (Chris Eliopoulos)

“Bronx’s Silent Night” is a double size issue at 40 pages which means more George Kambadais goodness. The title is appropriate as there is no dialogue in this story. While the Gargoyles are in their stone slumber, a winter storm covers New York in a blanket of snow. The Gargoyles awaken on top the Eyrie Building to the snow surprise. All of the Manhattan Clan’s gargoyles are present at the beginning of the story, but Bronx is the hero and main character. All of the gargoyles glide down to the city to explore and play in the snow except for Hudson who is more comfortable in his chair watching hockey on his tv. Bronx climbs down the side of the building to frolick in the snow. He even catches snow flakes on his tongue. He meets a Bull Terrier dog who behind the scenes from Nate Cosby we found out his name is Lance. Lance is the real life dog of Nate’s neighbor. Even though there is not much to read on the pages, Kambadais drawings matched with Eckleberry Bronx and Lance sound effects tell an effective tale. I self inserted holiday music and the jingling of bells in my head as I flipped through the pages. The good doggies see a woman who is desperately trying to find her cat in the snow storm. Bronx and Lance sniff a ball of yarn to try and track down the missing cat. They travel and play all over a snowy Central Park. They will eventually discover the missing cat as well as two freshly born kittens that the cat was found keeping warm. Bronx helps transport the cat, kitties, and Lance back safely to their owner.

  1. I believe there was actually an episode where Bronx helps out a family I think in the winter. However, this was from the spin-off(?) series (third season?) “The Goliath Chronicles” and fans don’t want to talk about that as much as they don’t want to talk about Bruno.
