Marvel has shown us What If?… Donald Duck became Wolverine and Thor. We get treated to MARVEL at another member of the Disney Fab Five taking center stage in What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel.
We already had a preview of Minnie Mouse as Captain Marvel from the Disney 100 variant cover of Amazing Spider-man #29 by Giada Perissinotto which was a tribute to the cover of Captain Marvel #1 (2014). That was just a special edition variant cover, and now we get a full issue of this epic mashup to enjoy.
The story in this issue is written by Steve Behling (plot) and Luca Barbieri (script) and illustrated by Giada Perissinotto. The covers are done by artists Giada Perissinotto, Peach Momoko, Phil Noto, Elena Casagrande, and Skottie Young. I opted to add the Giada Perissinotto and Skottie Young covers to my collection.
The main cover by Giada Perissinotto is a tribute to John Romita’s cover of Ms. Marvel #1 (1976). That historic issue was the first appearance of Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel who would later be known as Captain Marvel.
The classic Disney characters in this issue include Scrooge McDuck, Albert Quackmore, J. Jonah Duck, Figaro, the Beagle Boys, Magica DeSpell as Hecate, Pete as Peg Leg Scorpion, and Minnie Mouse as Captain Marvel. Donald Duck, Ludwig Von Drake and John D. Rockerduck are also referenced.
Here is the part of my review that I must urge you to stop reading if you haven’t read the issue yet to avoid all spoilers. The spoiler filled review will continue after this picture of Elena Casagrande’s variant cover.

Minnie Mouse works as a reporter for the Scrooge McDuck owned newspaper, the Chronicle. She starts off as the movie blogger, but Minnie soon gets promoted to an investigative reporter for the news section. Her assignment is to find out who is Captain Marvel. At first, Captain Marvel’s identity is even a secret to Minnie. Captain Marvel Minnie protects The Chronicle from an attack by Peg Leg Scorpion. I love the design of Pete as Peg Leg Scorpion. Later, she takes on a giant robot Beagle Boy that attacks Scrooge’s Money Bin. It is during this fight that Captain Marvel discovers that she and Minnie Mouse are the same person. We get a flashback to a couple of weeks earlier when Minnie went to the Money Bin looking for a job at the Chronicle as a writer. Magica De Spell was also at the Money Bin in battle with Scrooge for his number one dime. Minnie gets hit with a full cosmic blast from Magica while trying to protect the dime. This cosmic blast gives Minnie her Captain Marvel powers.
This issue’s story elements are a tribute to Ms. Marvel (1976-1977) issues #1-4. What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel was another great Disney and Marvel mashup that I feel both Disney and Marvel fandoms will love.
What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel retails for $4.99 and the story is twenty five pages in length. There is also some bonus content at the back of the book. We get a letter from the Senior Editor, Mark Paniccia, about Marvelous Minnie! We get some concept art for the character designs of Captain Marvel Minnie, Peg-Leg Scorpion Pete, J. Jonah Duck, Magica as Hectate, and the Beagle Boys Robot. The final page in the issue is an ad for the next big Disney Marvel mashup release, “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four”. If a collector’s edition release is ever made, I would love to see a cover gallery for each issue. A side by side reference guide of the classic covers that gave the cover artists their inspiration for the What If…? covers would also be cool.
After a year and a half of amazing Marvel and Disney mashup variant covers for Marvel’s Amazing Spider-man series, Disney fans finally get to enjoy some full issues with “Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime”, “What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine”, “What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor”, and now “What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel”.
A big thanks to Marvel for sending me an advanced copy of the issue for this review. What Disney/ Marvel mashup will we get next? In January, we will find out “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four”.

Personally, I really want Marvel to reprint the overseas “Spider-Mouse” story from over 20 years ago (before Marvel became part of Disney). It’s a very odd story and is worth reprinting.
