The dazzling denoument of Operation Crown Jewels unfolds here! Does Cruella succeed in her mad plan to steal England’s most famous baubles? Can professional jewel thief Emily Bezzler be trusted? Will the De Vil name ever be uttered in high society again? All will be revealed in Disney Villains: Cruella De Vil #5!

Emily Bezzler graces the cover of the action figure variant cover of Disney Villains: Cruella De Vil #5. This Cruella De Vil series was the last of the Dynamite Disney comic series to have action figure covers. I wish that the action figure variant covers would have continued for the other Dynamite Disney comic series (Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, Gargoyles Quest, and DuckTales).

The last time that we saw our hero/villain, Cruella, was in the penultimate issue #4 released three months ago. That is a long time to wait to see Cruella’s fate. When we last saw her, Cruella had “accidentally” stashed the Royal Dogs in a pillow case and thrown it in the getaway car. The dogs have of course gotten out of the pillow case and started barking and yapping non stop. Our bulldog narrator hears the barks for help and initiates a Twilight Bark to let other dogs know that Cruella is up to her dognapping days.

Horace and Jasper get out of the getaway vehicle at Cruella’s mansion to secure the jewels while Cruella and Emily return the Royal Dogs to Buckingham Palace. The vehicle is chased by a pack of dogs that were called to help track and stop Cruella. Emily and Cruella successfully return the dogs. Emily goes her separate way with her share of the jewel loot, and Cruella gets into her roadster car driven by her butler Archibald. It does sound like Emily and Cruella could have more adventures together if Dynamite decides to do additional Cruella comics in the future.

Meanwhile, back at DeVil Mansion…the goat starts to eat some of the royal jewels which causes Horace and Jasper to knock over some candlesticks that set the mansion on fire. Cruella returns to her home to see the fire disaster from those fools. Which is from the opening comic panels of the first issue of this series. You Fools!

This was another great villainous tale in Dynamite Comics’ Disney Villains series. The tone and art by Miriana Puglia through all issues definitely had the same feel of the classic 1951 film, 101 Dalmatians. Sweeney Boo delivered on sudden chills and expanding Cruella’s story since the end of the film.

Darling…look out for Cruella De Vil!

The digest sized trade paperback and hardcover releases that collect all five issues are tentatively scheduled for November. I do enjoy the trade releases of the Disney Villains comics, but I hope that they are eventually released as oversized collectors editions. There are plenty of Disney Villains that are worthy of series. I would loved to see comic series featuring Captain Hook and Gaston. Dynamite Comics does not currently have any new Disney Villains comic series listed in any of the Previews Catalog solicitations through November. Publish more Disney Villains comics please!

Be sure to check out the other current Dynamite Comics Disney releases: Gargoyles Quest, Lilo and Stitch, and Hercules.

Coming soon: DuckTales (November), The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Zootopia

  1. I hope they do one about Ursula!! I heard Dark Horse was supposed to publish an Ursula comic series a few years ago, but evidently it got cancelled before it even began.

    • Ursula is a great pick. I was so hyped for that Darkhorse Ursula comic. Disney Villains: Ursula and the Seven Seas was going to tell Ursula’s origin story. I am sure Dynamite would do a great job with Ursula.
