Marvel What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine Review

To celebrate Donald Duck’s 90th Anniversary and Wolverine’s 50th Anniversary, Marvel gifted fans with a one shot issue “What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine”. The story in this issue is written by Luca Barbieri and titled “Old Duck Donald”. Giada Perissinotto provides the illustrations for this momentous issue. The covers are done by artists Giada Perissinotto, Peach Momoko, Phil Noto, Ron Lim & Israel Silva, and Skottie Young. I opted to add the Giada Perissinotto and Skottie Young covers to my collection.

The main cover by Giada Perissinotto is a tribute to Frank Miller’s cover of Wolverine (1982) #1. The credits page of this comic features an epic split screen mashup of the classic Frank Miller cover and Giada Perissinotto’s cover combined.

The Disney and Marvel mashed up characters in this issue’s roster include Donald-Wolverine, Mickey-Hawkeye, Goofy-Hulk, Pluto-Colossus, Pete-Skull, and the Beagle Boys as Pete-Skull’s minions. Professor Xavier Von Drake is mentioned but not shown. Additional Disney characters in this comic include Grandma Duck, Gyro Gearloose, and Scrooge McDuck as themselves.

Here is the part of my review that I must urge you to stop reading if you haven’t read the issue yet to avoid all spoilers. The spoiler filled review will continue after this picture of Ron Lim and Israel Silvia’s variant cover which is a tribute to classic cover issue Wolverine #17.

Duckburg needs a hero as Pete-Skull has robbed all super heroes of their invincible weapons. Pete-Skull reigns over Duckburg from his headquarters on top of Killmotor Hill in Scrooge McDuck’s Money Bin. Meanwhile, Pete-Skull’s Beagle Boys minions terrorizes the streets of Duckburg. Mickey-Hawkeye seeks out Donald-Wolverine on Grandma Duck’s Falling Farm. Old Duck Donald would be happy to just continue his nap under the apple tree, but Mickey-Hawkeye eventually talks Donald-Wolverine into trying to stop Pete-Skull by hyping him up on stories of Donald-Wolverine’s glory days. We are treated to an amazing two page spread showcasing Donald-Wolverine in some of his classic suits.

The third member of this team up to stop Pete-Skull is a spray painted grey Goofy-Hulk. Donald’s bad temper can be triggered by the color green. The super hero trio is captured by the Beagle Boys and brought in chains to Pete-Skull inside the Money Bin. Superhero artifacts like Thor’s Mjolnir, Iron Man’s Helmet, and Captain America’s shield are in Pete Skull’s Money Bin. Being captured and brought to Pete-Skull was all part of the plan as Goofy turns green and Hyuck smashes through his chains and Mickey-Hawkeye’s chains. Mickey-Hawkeye shoots an arrow filled with green paint that splatters everywhere. The sight of so much green sets off Donald-Wolverine who SNIKTeds and claws his way all over the place in a bad temper rage fit all over Pete-Skull and his Beagle Boy minions. The defeated bad guys are taken to jail by Duckburg police. Scrooge McDuck gets his Money Bin back and Donald-Wolverine goes back to working for Scrooge with his job of polishing his coins.

After a year and a half of amazing Marvel and Disney mashup variant covers for Marvel’s Amazing Spider-man series, Disney fans finally get to enjoy some full issues with this summer’s “Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime” and “What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine”. I loved these special one shot editions, and I hope that the fun continues with many more Disney Marvel mashups releases published in the future. This was a fun anniversary tribute to the Duck and the Wolverine. Happy Anniversary!

What If…? Donald Duck Became the Mighty Thor (Lorenzo Pastrovicchio)

A big thanks to Marvel for sending me an advanced copy of the issue for this review. Now that I know what would happen if Donald Duck became Wolverine, I look forward to seeing the worthy Donald Duck wield Mjolnir in “What If…? Donald Duck Became the Mighty Thor”.
