Official Synopsis: Beware Morgana’s crystal ball! For within, there are visions of… uh, water? Oh wait, Darkwing’s teammate Neptunia is from the water – maybe that means something! But what? Without Launchpad’s compass to guide them, the Justice Ducks are all at sea. Will Darkwing be able to get over his own ego (unlikely) and ask for the help he so crucially needs to find the compass and save the day? Read on (in September) and find out!

Covers

This is a Dynamite Comics release. So you know that there is going to be a dangerous amount of covers. In this section, I am going to highlight some of the most dangerous covers for Darkwing Duck #9.

Darkwing Duck #9 (Carlo Lauro)

Ciro Canglialosi is illustrating the spin-off Negaduck comic series from Negaduck that will be released this September. He has also produced the last few Darkwing Duck action figure variant covers and the magnificent Stegmutt variant cover below.

Darkwing Duck #9 (Ciro Cangialosi)

I am collecting the action figure variant incentive covers for this Darkwing Duck comic series. Stegmutt is featured on Darkwing Duck #9. I definitely wish I had a Stegmutt figure in my collection.

Darkwing Duck #9 (Ciro Cangialosi)

Stegmutt is also featured on the variant cover by Drew Moss who is illustrating the Gargoyles: Dark Ages comics.

Launchpad has been pilot-napped, and there are no leads on where his special compass may be. Another Justice Duck, Morgana Macawber, has been added to the search party. Morgana uses her crystal ball to try to find Launchpad, but all her crystal ball is showing her is the ocean. Gizmoduck, Morgana, Gosalyn, and Darkwing search the top of the ocean from above in the Thunderquack. It seems like they are going to need Neptunia’s help. DW runs into Neptunia during the search, but they discover that both of the heroes have come up short in finding the compass or Launchpad.

Mayor Owlson calls Darkwing in the Thunderqack and tells him that St. Canard could use some super hero assistance as articles are going missing and the city is in the middle of a crime spree. Most importantly, Herb Muddlefoot’s Quackerware has gone missing! Darkwing is out to make some St. Canardians talk to see if they know anything about the whereabouts of the missing articles. While interrogating some bystanders, Stegmutt shows up and stops Darkwing as DW admits that maybe he is getting a little hangry. Herb has still not found his Quackerware, but he does have a tracking device. The tracking device says the missing Quackerware is located in Quacklantis which tracks with what Morgana’s crystal balling was trying to tell them at the beginning of the issue. If only there was a member of the Justice Ducks that could get them to Ducklantis…NEPTUNIA!

Darkwing Duck #9 (Mirka Andolfo)

There have been no listings for this Dynamite Comics Darkwing Duck run past issue #10 which means that the next issue could be the final issue for this series. This story arc will only be four issues. I feel like there is a lot to cover in the next issue if it is in fact the last issue. We still do not know the identity of the mystery villain who stole the compass and LP. I am really hoping that it will be a fun character from Darkwing’s past.

Darkwing Duck #9 (Cat Staggs)

The first six issues of Dynamite Comics Darkwing Duck will be re-released as a special collection in January. It will be titled F.O.W.L. Play, and come in three collectible editions of a trade paperback, trade hardcover, and trade hardcover signed by Amanda Diebert. Buying the individual issues definitely make the trade collections and series extension possible. Keep getting dangerous every month when new issues are released.

Darkwing Duck #10 is tentatively scheduled for October 25th, 2023. Please make sure to support the Dynamite Comics Negaduck, Gargoyles, Gargoyles: Dark Ages, Disney Villains Maleficent, and Disney Villains Hades series while you are out buying Darkwing Duck.

It feels great to get dangerous again with this new Darkwing Duck comic series.

One comment

  1. This sounds to me like another example of the pacing problems I mentioned in my comment on issue #3’s review, albeit in the opposite direction this time. If the next issue is indeed the last issue for this series, then it looks like the story’s conclusion is going to be majorly rushed unless Roger Langridge plans to continue it in his Justice Ducks mini-series. If this were the Boom! series, they probably would have revealed the Big Bad at the end of this issue.

By the way, this is now the second time in the past decade I’ve seen a beloved 1990s cartoon receive a revival comic that starts off with an overly-padded six-issue arc and then get cancelled after four more issues before being replaced by a team-up mini-series, the other one being IDW’s comic based on the original Powerpuff Girls. (Although Darkwing’s not also doing a crossover mini-series with the Gargoyles…)
