Official Synopsis: Behold…THE JUSTICE DUCKS! An elite team of superheroes that battle crime in perfect…just kidding. They’re actually a group of ducks (and a fish) that kinda/sorta work together sometimes, but Darkwing’s got that whole “I work better alone!” vibe thing going on, so this issue answers the question…CAN Darkwing Duck bury his ego and work with a super-team!? (Spoiler: Probably not?)

Darkwing and Launchpad visit the new Hall of Heroes museum in St. Canard. Darkwing thinks the museum is going to be dedicated exclusively to him. The museum is a popular tribute to ALL super heroes. Even Pirate Steven is in line for the new museum. There is no super hero discount on tickets. So Darkwing buys two tickets to the Hall of Heroes for him and Launchpad. Launchpad’s boots must be in the shop because he is casually shoeless in this issue.

Darkwing and Launchpad encounter many unique canardian superheroes before they get to the Justice Ducks exhibits. Launchpad makes a quick detour to the Sidekick Symposium which has a Launchpad McQuack portrait and a compass on a pedestal. This is a special compass for Launchpad; however, I really don’t remember Launchpad having a sentimental compass. A mysterious museum visitor with a cloak and bushy mustache admires the compass when LP is called into another room of the museum by Darkwing. We don’t know who this mystery protagonist will be, but I bet it will be a character that we are well familiar with when it is revealed.

Darkwing Duck #7 (Mirka Andolfo)

“It all began when Darkwing Duck realized he needed help…” The Origin of the Justice Ducks. Illustrator Carlo Lauro does some fantastic over-exaggerated Darkwing Duck faces in this series’ issues, and we get some absolute gold material in this issue as Darkwing walks through the Justice Ducks exhibits that highlight the team and includes a room and statue for each team member.

Darkwing runs into Neptunia in her tribute room, and they have an argument on who is the better super hero. A museum alarm goes off, and we find out that the museum is being robbed by the mysterious person that Launchpad met in the Sidekick Symposium. Through some accidentally teamwork, Darkwing and Neptunia are able to stop the thief from stealing most of his treasures, but our mystery person is still able to get away with Launchpad’s special compass. Darkwing and Neptunia vow to get the compass back and bring the mystery person to justice.

It was great to get more Neptunia content. Judging from future issue covers, it seems like they will add a new member of the Justice Ducks each issue as they search for Launchpad’s stolen compass. I enjoyed this kickoff issue to the new story arc.

This issue definitely made me want to go watch the classic Darkwing Duck episodes “Something Fishy” and “Just Us Justice Ducks” episodes on Disney+.

The first six issues of Dynamite Comics Darkwing Duck will be re-released as a special collection in October. It will be titled F.O.W.L. Play, and come in three collectible editions of a trade paperback, trade hardcover, and trade hardcover signed by Amanda Diebert. Buying the individual issues definitely make the trade collections and series extension possible. Keep getting dangerous every month when new issues are released.

Darkwing Duck #8 is tentatively scheduled for August 23rd, 2023. Please make sure to support the Dynamite Comics Gargoyles, Gargoyles: Dark Ages, Disney Villains Scar, and Disney Villains Maleficent series while you are out buying Darkwing Duck.

It feels great to get dangerous again with this new Darkwing Duck comic series.

  1. Anyone else find it strange that this non-canon comic series is the only time that all of the Justice Ducks have appeared together since their “team origin” episode from the original show? (Keep in mind, Morgana and Neptunia weren’t in the “Darkwing Doubloon” episode, and Morgana was lost in another dimension during the “Return of the Living Spud” arc that closed out the actually-canon Joe Books run.) Maybe they should’ve just made this a Justice Ducks comic series; I think I would have preferred that over them destroying Aaron Sparrow’s hard work.
