Poster Art of the Disney Parks Review

PRESS RELEASE: Expanded and updated, Poster Art of the Disney Parks, second edition features more than 85 new posters and concept art pieces and a lively narrative about their behind the scenes development. Disney attraction posters have been an important means of communication since Disneyland began displaying them in 1956. Posters from EPCOT, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland exhibit the nuances in presentation that give each park’s pantheon of posters it’s signature look and story. With a variety of vibrant voices quoted throughout the book, this expanded and updated second edition is a must-have for anyone who loves the original book, for Disney collectors, and for students of the arts.

Disney Publishing sent me a copy of Poster Art of the Disney Parks to review for this blog.

REVIEW: Disney Publishing recently released in October a new second edition of the popular Poster Art of the Disney Parks coffee table book. This second edition includes 100 more pages than the previous edition and has been updated with more than 85 new posters. The original book was released 10 years ago in 2012.

Poster Art of the Disney Parks is a large oversized coffee table book measuring at 11.5 x 1.13 x 14.38 inches. Some of the poster art that is featured in this book get their own page with the poster image size being a large 8 x 11.75 which are around the same size of the deluxe poster art prints that are sold in the Disney Parks.

The book starts off with an introduction from Disney Legend Tony Baxter. The chapters of the book are broken out by the different Disney Parks themed lands for the castle parks. There are additional chapters showcasing Shanghai Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Sea, Disney California Adventure, and Epcot posters.

Disney theme park posters are works of art that are the trailers for guests that are entering the park. It is very interesting to see the different versions of the posters from the same attraction from different Disney theme parks all over the world.

Haunted Mansion fans will enjoy seeing posters from Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland. A Mystic Point poster from Hong Kong Disneyland features Mystic Manor. Phantom Manor posters from Disneyland Paris are on display in the Frontierland chapter.

This is a gorgeous book of Disney theme park artwork to flip through. I definitely do not have the wall space in my house to display all of this fantastic art. So it is great to be able to appreciate the poster art collected in this book. I do have the full size posters of the Walt Disney World versions of Disney’s Haunted Mansion and The Pirates of the Caribbean framed and hanging in my house.

There are some poster artwork featured in the book from attractions and shows that are no longer around any more which may hit you in the feels. Seeing those posters brought back some great memories and put a smile on my face. A prime example being the Country Bear Jingle Bell Jamboree and Country Bear Vacation Hoedown which are no longer at Walt Disney World, but those shows are still around in Tokyo Disneyland.

Some of the pages in the book feature behind the scenes concept art sketches that were made to help come up with the final art for the attraction poster. My all time favorite Disney attraction from Shanghai Disneyland, Pirates of the Caribbean Battle for the Sunken Treasure, is one of the attractions that gets this treatment in the book that shows the process of creating the poster from the roughs to refining the composition to rough color to final line to the final magnificent poster.

Final Thoughts

If there was a Disney Theme Parks history class, this would be one of it’s text books. Danny Handke and Vanessa Hunt have put together a gorgeously curated collection of Disney fine art that tells a story of Disney’s finest attractions and shows. This is the perfect gift to give to Disney Parks fans or to spoil yourself. Poster Art of the Disney Parks would make a great souvenir from your past or future Disney Parks vacation to take home for the memories.
