Convention season is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. It felt like a little sense of normalcy returned this weekend when Orlando hosted one of it’s biggest parties of the year, Fanboy Expo’s MegaCon 2022.
The last MegaCon Orlando took place in August 2021. This year’s convention returned to it’s normal Spring timeframe. DuckTalks has been honored to be part of the press for the past three MegaCon Orlando conventions.
MegaCon Orlando 2022 ruled the Orange County Convention Center for a long four day weekend (Thursday, May 19th – Sunday, May 22nd).
Pro Tip: Historically, the crowds are always a lot more comfortable on Thursday and Friday.
The core weekend days of Saturday and Sunday were packed with people and the Orange County Convention Center also had other events in different concourse buildings which added to the parking and traffic problems.
This blog post will tell the tales of my personal experiences at MegaCon Orlando 2022.
MegaCon Orlando Guests
MegaCon Orlando’s special guest lineup of celebrities, voice actors, and comic creators was a lot stronger than the previous year’s event which suffered many cancellations due to scheduling conflicts and a Covid-19 surge in Florida. Some of the celebrity highlights in 2022 for me included the cast of Cobra Kai (Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Martin Kove, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan), Lord of the Rings’ Hobbits (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan), the Pumpkin King (Chris Sanderson) and Oogie Boogie (Ken Page), Mummy Champion (Brendan Fraser), and the Rookie (Nathan Fillion). That is just the tip of the celebrity ice burg from this event, but these were the ones that I was most excited to see. You can find the full list here.
Cobra Kai Gi outfits were everywhere which was an awesome sight since I love that show. I was able to fit the panel featuring Ralph Macchio, Mary Mouser, and Tanner Buchanan into my schedule. It was an enjoyable Q and A.
The Don Rosa Experience
The person that I was most interested in visiting with at this convention was one of the comic creators, Don Rosa. Don Rosa is the legendary comic writer and illustrator of many Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck stories including the Eisner Award winning “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.” His work is a lot more famous in Europe where his lines at European conventions can be hours to meet the Legend. In American conventions, his lines are much shorter which can attract Europeans to travel to the USA just to meet their favorite Duck comic maestro. A convention goer from Finland’s best day ever was made when they surprisingly passed Don’s booth at the convention. Don is the David hasselhoff of Finland. It was a true MegaCon Orlando miracle.
I first met Don at the MegaCon Orlando convention in 2018. Since then, I have acquired quite a collection of books and comics that I was looking forward to a great opportunity to meet him again.
I stopped by Don Rosa’s booth every so often when there was no line to chat and have part of my Don Rosa collection signed. He even included a sketch as he told me a behind the scene story. By the end of the second day, he had signed it all which was the ultimate MegaCon Orlando 2022 highlight for this Duck Fan.
Check out my haul.
I also bought some new prints from his booth to add to my collection.
The Show Floor
I definitely got my steps in walking up and down the rows of the show floor looking at the booths. MegaCon Orlando’s show floor is always packed filled with great exhibitors. Convention goers could get their fill each day searching for new treasures to take home.
There were plenty of food options located conveniently at opposite ends of the show floor as well as a Guardian from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
I searched the many booths all weekend for a Peacemaker minifigure, and I was finally successful in achieving peace in my time.
I ran into Alligator Loki visiting from the Dragonwood Wildlife Conservancy.
I am always in awe at the amazing creativity of the cosplayers at MegaCon Orlando. All the convention guests always bring their A game. Scarlet Witch from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a very popular costume this year. Wanda Maximoff and Vision classic comic looks from the Halloween episode of Wandavision was the most popular costume last year. Here are some pictures of some of my favorite epic cosplayers from MegaCon Orlando 2022.
I had a legendary weekend at MegaCon Orlando as you can hopefully tell from my pictures and stories above. Saturday was very crowded and exhausting at times. I would definitely recommend trying to go to the first two days of the show to definitely make sure you see everything since Saturday and Sunday crowds are usually massive. I look forward to MegaCon Orlando 2023.
Here are some guests that I would definitely love to see next year: James Silvani, Aaron Sparrow, Joe Caramagna, Tad Stones, Jim Cummings, Keith Ferguson, and the cast of Peacemaker.
See you next year MegaCon Orlando!
