Disney Masters

Fantagraphics launched the Disney Masters Series with Vol. 1: The Delta Dimension in May 2018. Since then they have published a few new volumes in the Disney Masters series each year. Volumes have been alternating between the central character and story being Mickey Mouse related or Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge.

Fantagraphics presents Disney Masters – acclaimed artists from around the world working in the grand Walt Disney tradition. Many of these stories are new to American readers and appear here for the first time in English. Fresh new artwork, fresh new adventures, and fresh new laughs!

Included Stories

There are 7 stories included in Disney Masters Vol. 7:

  • The Lost City
  • Yesterday Ranch
  • Mickey Mouse and the Marvelous Magnet
  • The Vanishing Railroad
  • The Case of the Hungry Ghost
  • The Pirates of Tabasco Bay
  • The Great Stamp Hunt

A professor of a museum hires Mickey and Goofy to take him to Mexico where he is to go on an expedition for The Lost City. The name of the lost city is Coyotehuatl, and it is thought to reside in the uncharted mountains of southern Mexico. Upon arrival in Mexico, they encounter i de rival twin bandits with different personalities. One bandit wants to help Mickey and the other wants to rob him and his friends and claim the lost city for himself.

Mickey and Goofy head to Yesterday Ranch to deliver some furniture that the ranch foreman purchased from Goofy. The owner of the ranch hates technology and does not allow anything that was invented past the 1890s on the ranch. The ranch foreman uses that to his advantage to procure valuable uranium ore from the mine on Yesterday Ranch.

When out for a car ride, Goofy and Mickey meet an inventor with a mysterious brief case that holds a magnet that repels metal instead of attracting it in Mickey Mouse and the Marvelous Magnet. Pete and the inventer’s ex assistant are after the magnet.

Mickey and Goofy are working on the railway as an engineer and fireman. Their only problem is that pieces of the train keep disappearing in The Vanishing Railroad.

Goofy gets hired to investigate a robbery at Macfingal Castle, and Mickey tags along to help his friend solve his first case in The Case of the Hungry Ghost. So far the ghost is only interested in raiding Mr. Macfingal’s pantry at night.

Mickey and Goofy try to put on a Pirates Days Festival in Tabasco Bay to help boost tourism for the town in The Pirates of Tabasco Bay. A highlight of the festival was going to be a pirate raid on the town by pirate actors. That plan sinks when Pete hosts a real raid on the town and plans to use Mickey, Goofy, and the fake raid as his cover up.

While helping to clean up Goofy’s attic, Mickey finds a rare and valuable stamp from the Banana Islands. The stamp is accidentally destroyed. Mickey is filled with guilt so he travels with his pal Goofy to the Banana Islands in search of a replacement in The Great Stamp Hunt.

Final Thoughts

There are a wide variety of Mickey and Goofy adventures in this Disney Masters volume of the work of Paul Murry. If you have been collecting all of the Disney Masters volumes released so far, you are assembling a great Paul Murry library as this is the fourth volume (3, 7, 13, 15) dedicated to his work. Mickey Mouse and the Marvelous Magnet and The Pirates of Tabasco Bay were my favorites from this batch of stories as Pete is a great villain and nemesis for Mickey.

I love the Disney Masters series because we get treated to stories and illustrations from more great Disney comic creators besides the legendary Barks and Rosa. We may have never had a chance to read these stories outside of Fantagraphics’ Disney Masters series.

I am definitely looking forward to reading future volumes of Fantagraphics’ Disney Masters series.
