About That Rumored Darkwing Duck Reboot!

I’ve spent all evening reading and re-reading those Variety and Deadline articles regarding a Darkwing Duck spin-off reportedly in development by Point Grey Pictures. I know I should be excited about this news breaking (and I am excited to see DW in headlines), but there are a few things in the articles that trouble me, and have my head spinning.

Let me begin by fessing up to something. We have known about a Darkwing Duck reboot for well over a year. We won’t betray the trust of our sources, but we’ve been anticipating this day for a long, long time. But… this isn’t what we have been expecting. This news doesn’t match what we know about what we presume is a continuation of the Darkwing Duck characters introduced in DuckTales 2017. For these reasons I have read these articles with some skepticism. With that said, let’s take a look at the information released today.

The Variety Article

Let’s begin with the Variety article. Joe Otterson reported that they learned about the series from sources, and that a “Darkwing Duck” reboot is in early development at Disney Plus. They go on to say that representatives from Point Grey declined to comment on the news. We don’t know who the sources are, but this exclusive news is not a press release or an official announcement.

Later in the article Otterson wrote, “Should the project go to series,…” This project is so early in development that it is not officially a series. Could it be that this was a pitch from Point Grey? Variety’s article says the series does not have a writer attached, but that seems odd . Otterson also states that Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver will be executive producers while Alex McAtee will be in charge of the project.

The Deadline Article

Shortly after Variety’s article Denise Petski’s article was published at Deadline. Petski’s article states there isn’t a writer, but Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will executive produce the show through Point Grey. Deadline does add they have confirmed the reboot is in early development at Disney Television Animation.

I know a lot of us are excited and a little freaked out right now. I know I am having a hard time considering that this might happen without continuing the story of Drake, Gosalyn, and Launchpad from DT17. At this time I don’t know that I am convinced that this series is happening. I think there is enough information in these articles to say that at least there was a pitch for this series, and that it may possibly be picked up in the future for Disney+.

And keep in mind these articles say there are no writers currently attached to this project (which further leads me to believe it is a pitch because… nothing has been written yet), and maybe the plan could be to include some of the writers from DT17…? Maybe?

What do you think about this rumored series? Would you be excited for a Disney+ reboot that may not be connected to the DT17 version of the characters?

  1. I’ll be honest I am kind of worried that the dt17 team had a pitch for a DW spin off and then seth rogans team stepped in and Disney chose them instead.

  2. I would guess that a Darkwing Duck reboot would not necessarily need to have any relation at all to the DuckTales version. How many different versions of Donald Duck are appearing in different animated shows at this very minute? Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Roadster Racers, Mickey Mouse shorts, Three Caballeros, DuckTales (probably something else I’m missing).

    • Didn’t Mickey Mouse Clubhouse end before Ducktales began while Legend of the Three Caballeros is over now? And I think you mean Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, not Mickey Mouse shorts (those ended last year). He’s also gonna be in Mickey Mouse Funhouse.

  3. honestly if its a direct spinoff of dt17 ill definitely watch it, and if it is I hope they keep most of the crew who works on duck tales. but if its not related to it at all and its a completely separate thing by Evan and Seth then I probably won’t watch it.considering Evan and Seths work in the past, I don’t think the type of comedy they’re known for would go well with drawing duck

  4. I really hope it does not continue the story of dt17, it’ll likely be a continuation of the original due to the positive feedback from the new animaniacs

      • Wasting your time. Many of us enjoyed the ride. Even if it is over. Just like we enjoyed Joe Books DWD comics even if those ended too soon. No way DT17 was the cause of Joe Books mishandling of that comic.

      • Angones’s darkwing episodes were fine, what I mean is he ruined uncle scrooge and donald duck, did you even read my comment

      • Yes I EVEN read your many comments. I thought you were saying DT17 impacted Joe Books Darkwing comic that was cancelled before DT17 was released. It was the last Darkwing comic published.

      • Well, anyway, it’s been fun, but I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear all this, this new Darkwing series could be awful, but I can rest knowing it will not mess with Uncle Scrooge or Donald Duck

      • Thanks btw, I’m glad you guys got enjoyment out of DT17 I really wanted to like it but I just couldn’t. I hope you’re not mad at me for being happy with this news, it is just a cartoon at the end of the day

      • Alan, we would never be mad at you just because we disagree on something. We are glad you are still enjoying the comics, and hope we will all enjoy whatever DWD series is next.

      • No, I wasn’t stating that it was over. I was responding to Alan saying Frank was done. I said even if it’s over. I haven’t seen anything to indicate season 4 is over. I suspect season 3 is wrapping up production now.

  5. Alan, I don’t think DT2017 has been canceled. The last I heard there was no official word on either cancelation or renewal. And we still have quite a few Season 3 episodes ahead of us.

Frank Angones and his team did not ruin the comics any more than the 1987 version did (that creative team was also accused of ruining the characters). The comics still exist as they always have for decades. Angones offered an interpretation that brings many of us joy. If it doesn’t bring you joy, so be it. Why knock it and wish unemployment on a hardworking creative team? Just read the comics. There are plenty of them to enjoy in lieu of DT 2017.

    • Yeah, yeah, same arguments I’ve heard for three years. Me wanting the show to end has nothing to do with putting people out of work, I just really hate what they’ve done, and it’s fine if you like it

  6. Okay, seriously, I think someone BESIDES piratesteven should post a blog soon… whats up with him posting all the blogs! But piratesteven please read this thanks for the blog on my birthday! I am not allowed to read dog man, I got a bunch of hardy boys books, and it was fun; I got a Scrooge Mcduck Money bin and on top of my cake was ducktales action figures! And I got a poster! (Not a ducktales poster.) Seriously, I loved new gods on the block! Are you checking mail.google.com because I am sending a thousand thingies… and I have a google. What does “rumored” mean? I’m guessing something to do with ducktales.

  7. Um, nothing about a certain production company (in this case, Seth Rogen’s one) being courted for the project means that it has no connection to DT2017. Eric Kripke is the showrunner of The Boys, and he has no affiliation with Rogen’s company – it just handles production work. Frank Angones will likely still be running the show.

    • It could all be true, and it may be connected (maybe even include Frank). The fandom has jumped to all kinds of conclusions based on these two reports, but we don’t know much at the moment The point of the blog is that nothing in those two reports match what we have known about the spin-off that we have been following for over a year, and it has completely caught us off guard.

      • Wait what about the part about DT2017 being canceled? Is that a rumor or have you heard enough to confirm it? I really hope that’s not true, this show is amazing!

      • I didn’t say that. Alan did. My response to him was based on his assumption that Frank Angones was done. I said even if it was over, and Alan went with it. I didn’t think anyone else would read into that it was over. Sorry for the confusion.

No confirmation that the show is cancelled. I believe season 3 is just wrapping up production.

      • No worries! Sorry for the misunderstanding! I’ve just been worried in general since there’s been no news on season 4 especially since we’re so far into 3 and in the past they’ve always announced the renewals super early. I’ve seen a lot of people say on Reddit they think it’s cancelled so I’ve been checking all around for whatever info I can get! Love the blog! You guys do great work!

Here’s to hoping we get plenty more seasons of DT2017 and a spinoff Darkwing with Frank involved!

      • Absolutely. All’s good.

But to be honest, the fact that we don’t have any news might mean the show is ending this season. With no big events or anything to schedule an announcement it’s possible the show continues. But in my opinion I think it is just as likely this is the end.

I don’t know that we will know until we are close to the final episodes airing… unless it gets renewed and then the news could break any time. Production on season three should be wrapping up, and the longer we go without news the more likely the show won’t be continuing.

      • I guess all we can do is hope and wait. I’ve been rewatching seasons 1 and 2 on Disney+ and running the Darkwing Special on Youtube in a different tab trying to get them more views. Maybe if Disney Channel/Xd doesn’t want it, we’ll get lucky and it’ll continue on with more seasons on Disney+ like Paul Rudish’s Mickey Mouse Show.

  8. I’m still wishing that Disney would just uncancel the 2016-17 Darkwing Duck comic and let Aaron Sparrow resolve all those plot threads he never concluded, even though I know it’ll never happen.

  9. […] Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg are producing a Darkwing Duck series for D+? That makes a lot more sense now that I know this series is ending. We still don’t know whether it’ll be in continuity with DT 2017 or not. I wouldn’t mind if they kept the voice actors & character models regardless. […]
