DuckTales hype is through the roof as we have the upcoming return of DuckTales (2017) Season 3 in late September. The first episode title has been revealed to be “The Phantom and the Sorcerer!” for September 21st.
The Phantom in the episode title has to refer to a member of F.O.W.L. that has been secretly disguised in Duckburg as the Funso’s Fun Zone mascot…The Phantom Blot.
The Phantom Blot is a character created by Floyd Gottfredson that originated from a 1939 Mickey Mouse comic strip titled “Outwits the Phantom Blot”.
In an effort to educate ourselves more on the origins of this mysterious character before his DuckTales episode begins, we will be diving into Fantagraphics fantastic book catalog.
It all started with a Mouse, Floyd Gottfredson’s classic Phantom Blot origin story is restored in Fantagraphic’s “Mickey Mouse Vol. 5: Outwits the Phantom Blot”.

The Phantom Blot’s next comic appearance was in 1955 in the Italian comics written by Guido Martina and illustrated by Romano Scaro. These comics were restored and collected in Fantagraphic’s “Disney Masters Vol. 5: Mickey Mouse: The Phantom Blot’s Double Mystery.”

The Phantom Blot made his return to comics in a seven issue series illustrated by Paul Murray in 1964 which was appropriately titled, “The Return of Phantom Blot.”
Fantagraphic’s will be releasing “Disney Masters Vol 15: Mickey Mouse: New Adventures of the Phantom Blot” in 2021. This volume will also have the first appearance of Goofy as Super Goof. The Phantom Blot even assembles his own villain crew which includes the Beagle Boys and Mad Madam Mim to battle against Mickey, Donald, Scrooge, and Super Goof. Sword in the Stones fans will love that villain crossover.

Why would the Phantom Blot work for fowl? He would never work as merely a pawn in another man’s game he’s his own boss.

Well, the damage is already kinda done, if Funzo was the phantom blot the whole time then that means that the phantom blot was outsmarted by the beagle boys in the episode “day trip of doom.” Not only that but he also hired Magica de spell somebody who would attract a lot of unwanted attention from Scrooge when fowl is deliberately trying to avoid him by setting their base up at funzo’s.

I agree, the character will be far less menacing if he has been Funso all along. I don’t think he has been Funso most of the times that we’ve seen Funso. Especially when he was beat by the Beagle Boys.

The episode has not even aired yet so please don’t get your feelings hurt. It is a completely different interpretation of the character as there is no way the original Phantom Blot’s deadly motives from 1939 would fly in an animated show in 2020. It is absolutely OK in this world to like the comics and the animated version as well as find the entertainment value in both. It is also perfectly OK to not like one or the other. Yes, there is a way the original motives would fly today, with some tweaking, just look at Bill Cipher. Also, if the original motives wouldn’t fly today, why bring back the character at all?

Nice to know I’m not the only one questioning why the Phantom Blot was made a F.O.W.L. agent and not kept as an independent villain like in everything else he’s in. Maybe he’s secretly plotting to overthrow High Command and take over F.O.W.L. and then the world himself? I know Steelbeak attempted that once in the Disney Adventures comics, so I can imagine the Blot would likely plan to do that if he was in an organization like F.O.W.L. (Though if the Blot ends up being the major threat in the season finale, I’m REALLY going to find it odd that Mickey’s not involved.)
