There are 3 stories included in Disney Masters Vol. 8:
- Duck Avenger Strikes Again
- Ellsworth’s Ornery Orphan
- Tale of the Twisted Twins
Duck Avenger Strikes Again was originally published in Topolino #788 on January 3, 1971. This story is the third appearance of the Duck Avenger. One night, the Duck Avenger is seen flying around town. They don’t know if he is a hero or a menace. It is a very visual scene about Duckburg. Duckburg citizens believe that they recognize the Duck Avenger to be Donald Duck. Donald knows this to be true, but the duck that they saw was not him as he was in his own bedroom when he himself saw the Duck Avenger flying by his house. It is up to the real Duck Avenger to solve this mystery; however, it is a hard mystery to solve when everyone including the cops think they know the Duck Avenger’s secret identity.
Ellsworth’s Ornery Orphan is a Mickey Mouse story that features two mynah birds. The first mynah bird’s name is Ellsworth. Mickey knows him because the bird used to be Goofy’s roommate. Ellsworth visits with Mickey and Pluto when he comes into town, and the introduces Mickey to his son Ellroy. Mickey is surprised because he did not know that Ellsworth, who didn’t like to be tied down to anything and was more of a free bird, had a son. Ellsworth tells Mickey the story of how he adopted his son Ellroy when he was working in the Sahara as part of the desert police, the Foreign Legion.
Tale of the Twisted Twins introduced me to a new character that I had no heard of in the duck universe, Brigitta Macbridge. Brigitta was a businesswoman who was infatuated with Scrooge McDuck. Tale of the Twisted Twins was a collaboration in story with Romana Scarpa and the great Carl Barks. There was a dinner meeting that took place in September 1975 that they both attended among some Disney comic greats from California and Italy. The two started talking about the Brigitta character and Carl Barks had an idea for a story where Brigitta was a siren who used perfume that smelled like money to really get Scrooge’s attention. That idea eventually became a part of the story in Tale of the Twisted Twins. I am not going to give away all of the details of this story, but I really enjoyed getting to meet this character that was new to me.
This volume of the Disney Masters series will make a great addition to your library\collection. Readers are treated to three great stories that are printed in English for the first time that are either written or illustrated by Roman Scarpa.
The Duck Avenger Strikes Again story makes me want to seek out and read other stories about Donald’s adventure as the Duck Avenger.
I love the Disney Masters series because we get treated to stories and illustrations from other great Duck comic creators besides the legendary Barks and Rosa.
I am looking forward to reading future volumes of Fantagraphics’ Disney Masters series.
