With the exciting news of the Legend of the Three Caballeros, information is slowly trickling out about the upcoming show. IMDB has listed many of the voice actors to be featured in the show. Among the most notable characters list, such as Donald Duck, Jose, Panchito and Pete, there are characters that we weren’t expected to see. April, May, and June Duck, voiced by Jessica DiCicco, are the characters that I am excited to see more of. But who are these characters and why do they resemble Huey, Dewey, and Louie?
April, May, and June Duck were original designed to be Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s counterparts. They first appeared in the Carl Barks comic “Flip Decision”. In this comic they are listed as nieces of Daisy Duck. The comic ends with the girls being Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s escorts. They appeared in other comics such as “The Double Date” and “The Beauty Business”.
In 1998, Dutch artists modernized April, May, and June by changing their hairdos and clothing in their Donald Duck series. They first make their appearance in “Nieuwe Coupe“, in which they are still quite minor characters.
In 2011, an unauthorized Ducktales and Darkwing Duck crossover series from Boom! Studios was created called “Dangerous Currency”. This series was written by Ian Brill and illustrated by James Silvani and Jose Massaroli . This crossover event featured many characters from both series and included a brief cameo of April, May, and June. While they are just background characters, they still make it in a more modern US comic.
April, May, and June Duck made their first television appearance on House of Mouse on the episode “Ladies Night”, where they take over Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s band. Now with the announcement of the Legend of the Three Caballeros, we get to see these characters back on the screen! We hope to see a lot of these characters in the show and can’t wait for it to premier in the US.
What does this mean for Ducktales 2017? Well, with Frank Angones hinting at some point we will see daisy in the show, we hope that at some point April, May, and June Duck join as well. The comics always had the girls interacting with the triplets, and we would love to see that transfer to the new show! Fan art of April, May, and June in the Ducktales 2017 style is already coming out. We would love to see how these characters would interact with the Huey, Dewey, and Louie in Ducktales 2017. Above is artwork created by @LaurenBDrawin which reimagines the girls in the new Ducktales style from the Dutch modernization, as well as unique personalities to go them.
