Fantagraphics is bringing us another Disney Afternoon in Vol. 6 of their Disney Afternoon Adventures book series. This series hooks up nostalgia to our veins in the form of the collection of comics from the Disney Adventures magazine as well as early 90s Disney comics starring characters from our favorite Disney Afternoon shows.

DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp: Disney Afternoon Adventures Vol. 6

Product Description:

It’s Scrooge McDuck and Launchpad McQuack versus the sinister sorcerer Merlock in a battle for Collie Baba’s treasure―and a whole lot more―in a new Disney Afternoon comics anthology also featuring TaleSpin and Darkwing Duck!

Quackaroonies! In the one-and-only comics adaptation of DuckTales: The Movie, Uncle Scrooge’s quest for Collie Baba’s treasure gives Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby a genie of their own… but wicked wizard Merlock wants the magic and power for himself, and he’ll stop at nothing to get it!

Then Baloo, Becky, and the TaleSpin crew seek their own lost treasure beyond “The Gates of Shambhala”―not knowing Don Karnage and the Air Pirates have joined the expedition in disguise! And in “Watts the Problem,” supercharged scoundrel Megavolt becomes a human battery… sucking the power out of St. Canard! Can Darkwing and Launchpad pull the plug? All this and Gummi Bears, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Goof Troop too!

Treasure of the Lost Lamp is the comic adaptation of the DuckTales movie, originally published as a one‑shot graphic novel in 1990. It looks fantastic in comic form, with extended scenes and dialogue that didn’t appear in the film. I’m genuinely glad this story was included in the collection—it absolutely succeeded in making me want to revisit the movie.

My Hero is a Goof Troop story from Disney Adventures Vol. 5, No. 14 (October 1995). This story takes place after the Goof Troop series, during the A Goofy Movie era, with Max now in high school alongside PJ and Bobby. Roxanne dreams of a hero sweeping her off her feet, and Max is determined to be that hero. With PJ and Bobby’s help, he attempts three heroic feats—each one a failure—before Roxanne ultimately becomes Max’s hero, rescuing him instead. As someone who loves every bit of A Goofy Movie content, this story was a real treat.

The Rise of the Pillager Queen is a TaleSpin story from Disney Adventures Vol. 1, No. 12 (October 1991). Baloo is hired—well, ordered—by Colonel Spigot to fly an abandoned hot‑air‑balloon ship carrying treasure. The ship, the Pillager Queen, was once captained by Don Karnage’s great‑uncle, Don Garbajo, and has been buried in snow and ice for years. Naturally, the hope is that Don Karnage and his crew don’t catch wind of the excavation.

Don’t Get Squeezed by the Spells at Loch Knees! is a DuckTales story from French Picsou Magazine #200 (September 1988). Scrooge’s cousin Meg McDuck invites him and the boys to her cottage in Loch Knees, Scotland. Scrooge insists on bringing his Number One Dime after Magica De Spell’s latest theft attempt. Magica overhears the trip plans, races to Scotland, locks Meg in a closet, and impersonates her. After putting Scrooge and the boys to sleep with a magical meal, she steals the dime. Once Scrooge discovers the real Meg, she reveals she also practices magic and locates Magica via crystal ball. A chase ensues involving a raven transformation, Launchpad’s plane, a spell reversal, a plunge into a river, another transformation into a pike fish, and finally an encounter with the real Loch Ness Monster, who swallows the dime. Fortunately, Mrs. Beakley had swapped the dime before the trip, saving the day.

Hocus Pocus Poultry is an Adventures of the Gummi Bears story from Disney Publishing Worldwide overseas pool in 1988. Tummi attempts to practice magic like Zummi by repeating a spell—but instead of casting it correctly, he accidentally turns himself into a chicken.

Watts the Problem! is a two part Darkwing Duck story from Disney Adventures Vol. 3, Nos 8 and 9 (June and July 1993). Megavolt becomes dangerously power‑hungry, and villain Mondo B. Assetz plans to convert him into a living generator capable of absorbing all the power in St. Canard to overthrow F.O.W.L. Darkwing must team up with Steelbeak to stop Assetz and Megavolt—unless Steelbeak double‑crosses him with his own scheme to topple F.O.W.L.

Hocus Pocus Poultry II is an Adventures of the Gummi Bears story from Dutch Disneyland (1988). Still determined to prove he can perform magic, Tummi tries again—this time attempting to make a chicken appear from an egg he slowly attempts to hatch himself.

Undermining Schemes is a Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers story from Disney Adventures One Shot Special (1990). The Rescue Rangers investigate the theft of all the cheese from Monsieur Rodaunt’s shop.

Getting That Healthy, Wealthy Feeling…Again! is a DuckTales story from Italian Mega Almanaco #394 (October 1989). Scrooge finds himself bored with collecting checks and filling out deposit slips—after all, you can’t swim in paperwork. He joins Launchpad and the boys on a treasure dig in a place he’s never visited before, only to realize he prefers the comfort of checks to the aches and pains of excavation.

The Gates of Shambhala is a three part TaleSpin story from Disney Adventures Vol 2, Nos 5-7 (March to May 1992). Baloo, Kit, and Becky are hired by Lucius, a wealthy mentor of Shere Khan, to search for Shambhala, the legendary city of mystical wisdom.

Gruff Audience is an Adventures of the Gummi Bears story from Brazilian Disney Mix #10 (November 1989). The Gummi Bears put on a variety show in an effort to cheer up Gruffi Gummi.

Vanishing Act is a DuckTales story from French Picsou Magazine #207 (April 1989). As Launchpad flies over the Bermuda Triangle, pieces of his helicopter begin mysteriously disappearing.

Review

Woo-oo! Six volumes in, and we finally get a DuckTales‑headlined entry in Fantagraphics’ Disney Afternoon Adventures series. The graphic novel adaptation of DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp is every bit as underrated as the film itself—maybe even more so. I genuinely loved reading this version, and at times I think I enjoyed it more than the movie.

And that’s just the beginning. This volume also delivers feature‑length Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin stories that were too big to fit into one issue of Disney Adventures magazine and had to unfold across multiple issues. Each one feels like it could have been its own movie or a multi‑episode TV saga. No surprise to anyone who knows me: the Darkwing Duck adventure, Watts the Problem!, was an instant favorite.

We even get an epic Goof Troop story set during the A Goofy Movie timeline.

Fantagraphics’ Disney Afternoon Adventures series is pure nostalgia for me, a perfect echo of the Disney Adventures subscription I had as a kid. But it’s also something more: a gateway to international Disney Afternoon comics I never knew existed. Discovering these stories feels like uncovering lost treasures from the Disney Afernooniverse I thought I already knew inside and out.

Woo-oo on into your favorite book retailer or online to collect another must have volume of Disney Afternoon goodness.

I really can’t get enough of these classic Disney Afternoon stories, and I hope that Fantagraphics continues to publish them in many future volumes of this Disney Afternoon Adventures series until we have them all.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND
