Fantagraphics Mickey Mouse #1 Review

Fantagraphics has been putting on Disney Comics educational clinics with their Disney hardcover books teaching us the history of Disney comics and introducing us to international stories translated to English for the first time. Now they are bringing monthly issues to your local comic book store to consume.

Today, we will take a look at Mickey Mouse #1 (Legacy #331) published by Fantagraphics.

Mickey Mouse #1 (John Loter)

Release Date: November 19th, 2025

Covers: John Loter, Andrea Freccero, Al Taliaferro

There are three stories in this issue:

  • The Phantom Blot’s Double Revenge
  • There’s Many a Slip…
  • I Scream, You Scream
Mickey Mouse #1 (Andrea Freccero)

The Phantom Blot’s Double Revenge was originally published in Italian Topolino 2608 (2005). This is the first time the story is being published in the USA. The story is written by Andrea “Casty” Castellan, and illustrated by Roberto Vian. The ultimate Disney comics villain, the Phantom Blot, is back! He has invented a way of cloning anyone or anything instantly. No one in Mouseton is safe from the cloning. The Phantom Blot demands one million dollars delivered to him at an old pay phone to restore singularity in Mouseton. He is able to get away with the money, but that is just the beginning as he wants one million dollars delivered to him every day. The clones disappear the next day after they were created. Will Mickey and Goofy be able to outwit the Phantom Blot? Researching the Phantom Blot character is what really got me into reading classic Mickey Mouse comics. He is such an epic and dangerous foe to go against Mickey, and this was a great story for Fantagraphics to kick off their new Mickey Mouse series.

There’s Many a Slip… was originally published in American Mickey Mouse Sunday Comic Strip (1933). The story is written by Ted Oaborne, and illustrated by Floyd Gottfredson. Mickey takes a shower to get ready to go to a dance with Minnie. He slips on a bar of soap getting out of the shower, and there dance date needs to change to a movie date due to Mickey’s injuries.

I Scream, You Scream was originally published in Italian Topolino 3127 (2015). This is the first time the story is being published in the USA. The story is written by Simone “Sio” Albrigi, and illustrated by Stefano Intini. This is a fun Super Goof adventure where Super Goof flies all over town responding to citizen’s screams. The first screams end up being false alarms of a school classroom loudly practicing the alphabet. The second scream is also a false alarm of a boy sneezing loudly. The third scream is the real deal of an attempted robbery, but Goofy’s Super Goof powers wear off. He is still able to scare the robber away and save the day as he plummets from the sky into a nearby trash can. I love digesting all the Super Goof comics that I can after reading Fantagraphics Disney Masters Vol. 27: Super Goof and the Strange Case of Dr. Syclocks.

Mickey Mouse #1 (Al Taliaferro)
