My Recap and Review
One thousand years ago…Demona rescued Angelika from the alchemist De Ablo (Diablo).
We arrive back to present day atop the Baxter Building, the home of the Fantastic Four. Angela, Broadway, and Lexington are about to battle the First Family. The Gargoyles and the Fantastic Four decide to introduce themselves to each other and decide mutually that they are not at war with each other. Sue Storm says she recognizes the Gargoyles from what she saw on TV as she quotes part of the Gargoyles tv intro. She heard about the Gargoyles from the news. The Gargoyles were at the Baxter Building because they saw the Fantastic Four logo in the sky. Both teams head to the Brooklyn bridge to check out a situation involving Paul Duval…the Grey Gargoyle. Paul Duval is a chemist who has the ability to turn people to stone by touching them. Duval tosses a smoke bomb into the air which transforms some of New York’s citizens and two of our heroes, Angela and Mr. Fantastic, to stone.
Meanwhile at Stark Industries, we see the Marvel Gargoyles meeting that I was most excited for…Tony Stark and David Xanatos. I am imagined in my head that if I was sitting in a movie theater for this meeting scene that the audience would have erupted in applause. Xanatos finds Tony’s Hall of Armor Iron Man suits impressive. Xanatos leaves but later returns to Stark Industries in his full gargoyle armor suit to retrieve a magical item. We get an Iron Man vs. David Xanatos face off that my dreams were made of. Tony calls David’s suit a knockoff. Xanatos’ Gargoyle Steel Clan army keeps Iron Man busy while he escapes.

Chris Issac is a human that had his soul transferred into a dead gargoyle. He escapes from a place where he was being held prisoner. He heads to the Eyrie Building to warn the Gargoyles of an evil plan and tells them that Diablo is on the hunt for gargoyle blood. The gargoyles were hoping that Diablo could change Angela back to a gargoyle from her current stone state. Diablo sends Dragon Man (an android dragon) to battle the gargoyles and the Fantastic Four while he attempts to get the blood from Angela. Diablo says an incantation which breaks the spell and turns Angela, Mr. Fantastic, and the New York citizens back from stone. Demona shows up and saves her daughter, Angela, from Diablo. The Manhattan Clan of gargoyles team up with the Fantastic Four to take down the Dragon Man. It is good to have friends and allies only a few buildings away.

This was such a fun and unexpected crossover that I never thought I would see. The Fantastic Four is having a big year in comics as well as the much anticipated Fantastic Four MCU movie this past summer. Two of my kids are dressing as the Fantastic Four for Halloween. The Gargoyles resurgence of the 2020s with both new merch and comics from Dynamite Comics should be studied. Gargoyles will enter the world of Disney Lorcana next month to introduce even more fans to this epic franchise. I thought this crossover story by Greg Weisman was entertaining as usual. As the Gargoyles’ father, every story that Greg adds to the Gargoyles world feels so authentic and extends the continuity and lore of the Gargoyles world. David Xanatos’ interactions with Tony Stark was a dream come true. The artwork in this issue by Enid Balam was please excuse my truthful pun…Fantastic! The main cover and variant covers for this special issue all would look fantastic on my walls or in a museum. I especially love the Gabriele Del’Otto cover with Goliath and the Thing. I need to track down a Skottie Young cover with Mr. Fantastic and Bronx for my collection. I love all of the Marvel and Disney collaborations from this past year, and I am excited for all future releases. Another Fantastic Four / Gargoyles crossover issue will be published by Dynamite Comics in November.
