Marvel Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck #1 Review

Marvel has been crushing it lately with the addition of some of our favorite Disney characters to their lineup of comics. Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime was followed up with seven Marvel & Disney: What If…? issues where Mickey and Friends got to live their epic Marvel super hero dreams. Now we get a new Uncle Scrooge tale, Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck, which links up with the events that took place in Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime. Unlike the other recent Marvel & Disney collaborations which were all one shots, Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck is a four issue mini series. The series will be written by Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime writer, Jason Aaron, and illustrated by a team of talented artists.

My Recap and Review

Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck story starts off with a prologue chapter illustrated by Mahmud Asrar. Scrooge finds himself in a situation that he believes to be a dream or in this case a nightmare where every coin in his money bin is missing. He finds a box wrapped in chains with a note. He is familiar with the handwritten as it is his own. I got a laugh at this statement by Scrooge as the note is in standard Walt Disney Company text font. Scrooge is attacked by heavy artillery robots that are also looking for Scrooge’s money. We find out later that this robot army are coin operated. Scrooge brings out his heavy artillery which are his fists as he takes on the robots in an epic Marvelesque cinematic battle within the empty money bin. Scrooge is successful in the first round, but the robots keep coming. Scrooge escapes through a blast in the money bin and runs down Killmotor Hill into a desert which once was Duckburg. Scrooge starts to think that maybe this wasn’t a dream. This is the end of the prologue. The next two pages showcases comic panel images that highlights the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck intertwined with images from Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime. These pages remind me of the Marvel logo flip book that shows up before Marvel movies. This is followed by the comic title and credits pages. The story in this first issue is titled “The End Begins”.

Ciro Cangialosi illustrates the main pages of “The End Begins”. I loved Ciro’s Disney Duck art for covers for Dynamite Comics’ Darkwing Duck series and as the main illustrator on Dynamite Comics’ Negaduck series. The villains of this story are an alien race of beings called the Connoisseurs. They collect the finest items in the universe, and they are the owners of the show no mercy coin operated robots from the prologue. We learn that the most precious art and artifacts from the museums of every continent have been brought onto the Connoisseurs space ship. Scrooge McDuck led many battles against the Connoisseurs all over the world, but like the coins in the money bin Scrooge had also gone missing. Three years pass and Scrooge’s fortune of coins have still not been found. The Connoisseurs decide that they want to check inside a volcano for the coins. Gladstone Gander won a lottery to be the spokesperson for Earth, but even his luck would not save him if he went into the volcano. The next best choice is to send a familiar sailor, Donald Duck into the volcano. Donald is saved by his nephews who are traveling in a Mad Max modified version of Donald’s 313 car. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are a part of the rebellion against the Connoisseurs. Gyro Gearloose modified the vehicle before he was arrested.

The next pages are illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Daniele Orlandini. We get a flashback to many years ago in Glasgow, Scotland where a young Scrooge McDuck is a shoeshiner trying to make a living. The Connoisseurs robots show up to interrogate young Scroogie on the whereabouts of his coins. The current time Scrooge shows up and saves young Scrooge who also ends up saving older Scrooge. The world around them keeps disappearing as the Connoisseurs are out to destroy Scrooge’s memories.

Ciro Cangialosi wraps up the issue in the final two pages as we are shown that in the current time. The Connoisseurs’ space ships are in the skies above Scrooge’s money bin on Killmotor Hill. Inside the money bin, Scrooge is asleep while strapped to a table with a contraption on his head. Scrooge has been there for quite some time as he has grown a long beard. The Connoisseurs will destroy all of Scrooge’s memories as they search for all of Scrooge’s coins for their collection.

This is the beginning of an epic Scrooge McDuck adventure. Gabriele Dell’otto’s covers from each issue in this series belong in a museum. The interior art that is illustrated by a talented team of various artists has the appearance of a big budget Marvel movie. Jason Aaron’s larger than Duckburg life story fills every panel with action starring all of the characters from Duckburg that we all love. Each story section of this “The End Begins” felt like a blockbuster movie. Disney Duck fans will love Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck. Our beloved favorite characters are in good hands wit Marvel.
