Marvel has shown us What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine and Thor along with What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel. We witnessed Mickey and Friends as the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. Now we will have the question answered What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man.
The story in this issue is written by Steve Behling (plot) and Luca Badbieri (script) and illustrated by Donald Soffritti. The colors are by Lucio Ruvidotti, and the comic is lettered by Laura Tartaglia. The covers are done by artists Donald Soffritti, Dan Panosian, Phil Noto, Mark Brooks, and Skottie Young.
What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man draws it’s inspiration from the Tales of Suspense #39 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck.

The classic Disney characters in this issue include Donald Duck as Donald Duck/Iron Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Gyro Gearloose, Daisy Duck, and the Beagle Boys.

Here is the part of my review that I must urge you to stop reading if you haven’t read the issue yet to avoid all spoilers. The spoiler filled review will continue after this picture of Mark Brooks’ variant cover.

The story inside this issue is titled “Iron Duck is Born!”. Donald pushes his way through a jungle of a lawn to get to Gyro Gearloose’s house to pick up the plans for a Gold Drill for his Uncle Scrooge. Gyro is unable to find the plans so he gives Donald a USB stick that has some of his invention plans stored on it. The Beagle Boys overhear about the Gold Drill, and they Duck knap Donald while he is on his way back to his Uncle’s Money Bin. The Beagle Boys lock Donald in an abandoned factory and give him the supplies for him to build them the Gold Drill. Instead of building the drill, Donald finds schematics and builds Gyro’s Armor for Gardening. The red and gold armor is equipped with leaf blower gauntlets, an iron rake, and plant wire to tie up the Beagle Boys. Donald uses the armor to take down the Beagle Boys and deliver them and the Gold Drill plans to his Uncle Scrooge. Donald flies Daisy to Paris for their date.
Iron Man is one of my favorite Marvel characters. It was sensational seeing Donald Duck as the Iron Duck. The covers for this issue were all epic. So far in these Marvel What If…? Disney collabs, Donald has become Wolverine, Thor, the Thing, and now Iron Man. Mickey Mouse portrayed Iron Man in the What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Avengers issue, but I prefer Donald Duck in this role. It is fun to see Donald play these legendary characters in inspired origin stories. I would love to see Donald as my all time favorite Marvel character, Star-Lord, in a future comic in this series.

“What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man” retails for $4.99 and the story is twenty five pages in length. There is also some bonus content at the back of the book. We get a letter from the Senior Editor, Mark Paniccia, about Donald Duck as the Iron Duck! We are treated to some of the illustrator’s warm up sketches and study of Iron Duck. The final page in the issue is an ad for the next big Disney Marvel mashup release, “What If…? Goofy Became Spider-Man”.
It was recently revealed by a preorder listing on Amazon that all of the Marvel & Disney What If…? comic mashups will be collected in a trade paperback collection. The collection is tentatively scheduled to be released on October 28th, 2025. You can preorder the collection at the link below:
