Marvel has shown us What If…? Donald Duck Became Wolverine and Thor along with What If…? Minnie Became Captain Marvel. We witnessed Mickey and Friends as the Fantastic Four. Now we will get to see Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy assemble in What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Avengers.
The story in this issue is written by Steve Behling (plot) and Luca Badbieri (script) and illustrated by Alessandro Pastrovicchio. The colors are by Lucio Ruvidotti, and the comic is lettered by Laura Tartaglia. The covers are done by artists Alessandro Pastrovicchio, Adam Kubert, Phil Noto, Dan Jurgens, and Chrissie Zullo. I opted to add the Lorenzo Pastrovicchio cover to my collection.
What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Avengers is the retelling of the legendary Avengers (1963) #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

The classic Disney characters in this issue include Mickey Mouse as Mickey-Iron Man, Minnie Mouse as Minnie-Wasp, Donald Duck as Donald-Thor, Goofy as Goofy-Hulk, Pluto as Pluto-Ant-Man, Gladstone Gander as Gladstone-Loki, Scrooge McDuck as Scrooge-Odin, and Daisy Duck as Lady Daisy-Sif.

Here is the part of my review that I must urge you to stop reading if you haven’t read the issue yet to avoid all spoilers. The spoiler filled review will continue after this picture of Dan Jurgens’ variant cover.

The story inside this issue is titled “The Coming of the Avengers”. The story starts off in Ducksgard where we get our first glance of Gladstone Gander as Loki. I think that is a great casting choice, and it is great to see a new Disney Character entering the Disney & Marvel What If…? world. Gladstone-Loki’s plan is to have Goofy-Hulk causing destruction that would require Donald-Thor to have to stop him. Gladstone-Loki wants to ultimately humiliate Donald-Thor in Ducksgard. Goofy-Hulk is hypnotized to steal Duckburg’s bicentenary celebratory cake. This fowl act also grabs the attention of the rest of the superheroes in town: Mickey-Iron Man, Minnie-Wasp, and Pluto-Ant-Man. Donald-Thor and Lady Daisy-Sif suspect that Gladstone Loki is responsible for the Goofy-Hulk issue. Donald-Thor returns to Ducksgard to confront his cousin Gladstone-Loki. Donald-Thor easily defeats Gladstone-Loki and his mischievous clones. With Gladstone-Loki captured, his spell and power trance over Goofy-Hulk is broken. The heroes in Duckburg form the Avengers and assemble for the first time.

“What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Avengers” retails for $4.99 and the story is twenty five pages in length. There is also some bonus content at the back of the book. We get a letter from the Senior Editor, Mark Paniccia, about Avengers Assemble! We get some concept art for the character designs of Donald-Thor, Mickey-Iron Man, Pluto-Ant-Man, Minnie-Wasp, Goofy-Hulk, and Gladstone-Loki. The final page in the issue is an ad for the next big Disney Marvel mashup release, “What If…? Donald Duck Became Iron Man”.
It was recently revealed by a preorder listing on Amazon that all of the Marvel & Disney What If…? comic mashups will be collected in a trade paperback collection. The collection is tentatively scheduled to be released on October 28th, 2025. You can preorder the collection at the link below:
