Zootopia #2 (Trish Forstner)

Official Synopsis:

After their investigation into the PB&J cell phone sabotage plot temporarily stalls, Officers Hopps and Wilde respond to a call that most cops would avoid like a stale donut – a break-in at the City Dump!

Or rather, a break-in at the Zootopia Recycling Depot, as its managing skunk Chuck Flowers is quick to emphasize when Hopps and Wilde arrive to view his security tapes. The footage of the felonious raccoons and opossums hauling away bags of garbage is clear enough, but what’s not clear is what kind of trash it is that they’re stealing – or why.

There’s only one way to crack this case: It’s time for a good old-fashioned stake-out!

My Recap

*STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID ALL SPOILERS*

Unlike the first issue, there is no published title for this story. The issue starts off with a sequence of panels of a cop refresher Be Alert instructional video that Chief Bogo is sharing with his team of cops at the ZPD. I really like the 80s vibe that the characters in the video are giving. There is a brown bear with glasses a mustache and a red trench coat. The other characters in the video include a rhino, a hippo, and a wilderbeast. Chief Bogo mentions while handing out assignments a report of an intruder at the recycling waste management processing center. Judy volunteers herself and her parent Nick Wilde to investigate the dump. Chief Bogo is surprised that Judy was not badgering him about the PB&J Phone explosion from the previous issue. We get a funny badgering joke, and then Clawhauser gives readers a quick recap how the last case ended.

The Zootopia recycling and waste containment facility is run by a skunk in a green jump suit named Chuck Flowers. Judy and Nick go undercover stakeout at the facility. Nick is a worker and Judy hides in a yellow compost lawn and leaf bag. Someone is hiding stolen valuable loot in the compost bags for a raccoon and possum to pick up at the facility late at night. They pick up a loot bag and the bag that Judy is hiding in, and they take both bags to their hideout. Nick is able to track Judy down to the hideout, and our favorite Zootopia cop team takes down the bad guys and secure the loot bag so that they can make the delivery to the big boss in the next issue.

I really like the new animal characters and places that are being introduced in this Zootopia comic series. They definitely fit in to the whole Zootopiaverse. Is Zootopiaverse a thing or did I just make that up? I am looking forward to finding out who the main animal villain boss is behind all of these crimes, but we are still a few issues away from that reveal. Each issue feels like it could be an episode for a Zootopia animated series. Alessandro Ranaldi’s art continues to impress. Zootopia is definitely a comic that I look forward to reading every month.
