DuckTales #1 (Ivan Bigarella)

Official Synopsis:

The ridiculously wealthy Scrooge McDuck is the most famous resident of Duckburg-but his fortune goes far beyond mere currency. To his young nephews, “Unca” Scrooge is rich in something even more important than money stories!

Whether it’s the saga of how he dug his first million out of the Klondike, or the many times he saved his lucky Number One Dime from the clutches of Magica De Spell, the feisty tycoon is a font of mesmerizing tales and Huey, Dewey, and Louie can’t get enough!

But even as they pester their Uncle to share more yarns of his legendary quests and globetrotting treasure hunts, the three boys are about to learn that the most valuable item Scrooge McDuck owns isn’t locked up in his absurdly capacious Money Bin -it’s the lifetime of wisdom he’s got stockpiled inside his head!

My Recap

*STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID ALL SPOILERS*

Brandon Montclare has stated that the first few issues will focus around Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie in Duckburg. This comic is based on DuckTales ‘87 in the setting and character designs, but the nephews do seem like they could have some distinct personalities to them inspired by the most recent reboot of DuckTales in 2017. I love that move personally. Tommaso Ronda brings his own unique art style to some of our favorite Disney Ducks. These characters have been around in comics forever, but the art in this comic is very fresh. The art really is top tier. Scrooge tells the boys three stories as they. These story flashbacks from Scrooge’s past are presented in Carl Barks comic art style which Tommaso Ronda pulls off perfectly. Carl Barks and Don Rosa purists would approve and be fans of Ronda’s work. I know I am a fan of this panel below and that pirate duck background character.

The first story arc in this DuckTales series is titled “Four Corners of Your World.” Part One is named “The More Things Change…” Scrooge and his nephews take a break from counting money at Scrooge’s Money Bin to take a stroll of Duckburg. The boys want to go make money not count it. Scrooge tells them treasure hunting is about looking out for opportunities. We get a great two page amazing aerial shot of all of Duckburg. They walk the streets of Duckburg all the way to McDuck Manor. Although they are not featured in this issue, we do get some panels that include Mrs. Barkley, Webby, Duckworth, and Launchpad McQuack. Huey, Dewey, and Louie crave some entertainment. Scrooge indulges by telling them some flashback stories of treasure artifacts that are found around the house. The switch to Carl Barks’ famous art style for the flashbacks is an amazing choice. At the end of the issue, Scrooge pulls out a treasure map that ends up being a map of Duckburg. Which as noted will be the featured location for the first few issues. All of your favorite DuckTales characters will be coming to future issues, and next month’s issue will feature Magica De Spell. I personally can’t wait for some Launchpad McQuack and Flintheart Glomgold. I loved this first issue. DuckTales fans of all ages are going to love reading and collecting this new DuckTales comic series. I look forward to solving mysteries and rewriting history with Brandon Montclare and Tommaso Ronda. Not pony tales or cotton tales, no DuckTales…Woo-oo!

DuckTales fans, it is time to Woo-oo again!
