My Review
*STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID ALL SPOILERS*
The story in this issue is titled “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go”. At the end of the previous issue, Hercules was without a doubt that Hades was behind all of the Greek gods going missing. The world has gone to heck without it’s gods. Our hero team of Hercules, Megara, Phil, and Galatea descend upon the Underworld to search out and confront Hades. This leads to a quick summary retelling of the events of Hades evil plan and his ultimate defeat to Galatea. Finally, we get to see George Kambadais illustrate one of my favorite Disney Villains, Hades. The Hades illustrations did not disappoint, but we know from the end of the previous issue that Hades is not the big bad of this story. That is the Sphinx.
Our heroes travel by boat in the Underworld. The all bones Charon navigates the river. Charon appropriately wears an Egyptian hat on top of his boney skull. Hercules and Megara just think he is wearing it as a fashion statement and not to appease a new lord of the Underworld. The boat is attacked by vicious harpies until our heroes are saved by Hades’ three headed demon hound, Cerberus.
Team Hercules finds the missing gods and the not Hades threat that is the Sphinx. Zeus tells Hercules that Sphinx is more dangerous than the Titans, and she was banished from Greece to Egypt some time ago. I really love how Elliott Kalan is cleverly mixing Greek and Egypt mythology for this story. George Kambadais’ Sphinx design is epic, and she is as powerful and evil as described. Kambadais had some spectacular fight scenes in his Gargoyles comics, and now we get to see Team Hercules have a brutal battle with the Sphinx that our heroes will not win. Sphinx is an incredible new adversary for Hercules. The cliff hanger ending will leave you in high anticipation for the next issue. Did the good guys just lose? Wait…what?
This was the best issue of Dynamite Comics Disney Hercules by far with an unexpected Avengers Infinity War type ending. This issue with the ultimate villain reveal to Hercules just elevated this comic series to another level. I want to tell you that you won’t have to wait too long for the next issue, but “What is our hero’s final fate? Find out in new Hercules adventures coming very soon…!” In comic book schedule time, that coming very soon could be months. I will let you know when solicitations for Hercules #7 appears in the Previews Catalog.
