My Review
*STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID ALL SPOILERS*
This issue is titled “The Cakewalk”. When we last saw Negaduck, he had been double crossed by Harold and the club of villains which totally sounds like a move Negaduck would try to pull off himself and be proud of. We find out that this act of mutiny was the plan all along. Dr. Dooz made a copy of Negaduck’s essence and housed the essence in her incredible automation Mega-Negaduck robot. I really like the design of the Mega-Negaduck robot. The villains leave Negaduck in his cage on the island and take his submarine to ransack and loot a luxury yacht. Negaduck’s cage has an open bottom so he is able to dig himself to freedom through the sand. Negaduck catches up to the villains in his blimp.
None of the passengers of the luxury yacht are intimidated by the villains club until Mega-Negaduck gets mean and starts threatening them. The villains return back to their secret lair after collecting the loot. A fun easter egg at their villains party is a Darkwing Duck arcade machine. The Mega-Negaduck robot alerts the villains that global law enforcement has tracked their sub to the secret lair. The villains are convinced that hundreds of law enforcement will descend upon them, and the villains’ only option is to escape into a portal back to the Negaverse. They all jump into the portal in a panic.
It is then revealed that it was Negaduck disguised as the Mega-Negaduck robot. Negaduck goes into full villain monologue mode to Harold and Dr. Dooz about how he escaped the island and then infiltrated the villains’ secret lair as Mega-Negaduck. Harold and Dr. Dooz are thrown into the portal, and Negaduck celebrates as he now can move out of the hamburger on top of Hanburger Hippo since he now has his own super villain lair.
The comic ends with “The End…For Now!” I never saw a Negaduck comic series coming, but the creative team definitely delivered. I wouldn’t mind more Negaduck comic issues in the future. Ciro Cangialosi’s art filled every panel with vibrant colors and details. I love his art style, and I can’t wait to see what he works on next. Both story arcs by Jeff Parker felt very Negaduck, and I like that he basically wrote him as evil Darkwing. Since Negaduck worked as a series, maybe other Darkwing Duck series from the DW rogue gallery will get their chance at a series next…Megavolt, Bushroot, Quackerjack, or Liquidator?
