Official Synopsis:

THE CHAMPION OF OLYMPUS RETURNS!
The world’s favorite demigod-turned-mortal is back, and he’s about to embark on the biggest adventure since The Odyssey!

The Greek gods don’t really get why Hercules chose a mortal life over the opportunity to join them on Mt. Olympus, but since he proved his mettle as a hero many times over, they’re happy to enlist his help with missions that require interventions in the earthly realm. So when Aphrodite grants an artist’s wish that his sculpture be brought to life, Herc gets the call to clean things up when the newly conscious artwork proves to be more bone-crushingly lively than expected!

But after discovering that the rogue statue is just misunderstood, and a little rambunctious (much like himself as a youth), Hercules returns to explain the situation to Aphrodite – only to find her temple empty and abandoned. Is the goddess of love just pouting, or is something more sinister afoot? If you know anything about classic mythology, you know it’s going to be the latter!

My Review

The Official Synopsis for this issue that I included above is a very accurate recap of the events that take place in this debut issue.

The 1990s was such a monumental great time for Disney feature animation films. Disney’s 1997 hit, Hercules, could be the best among that best from that magical decade. Disney Hercules would be Dynamite’s second title based on characters from that film. I had a great time reading Disney Villains Hades that was published by Dynamite last year. The writer on Hades, Elliott Kallan, returns to the Hercules world as the author on this new series. This time Elliott is paired up with George Kambadais who masterfully illustrated the twelve issue Gargoyles series by Dynamite. I was hoping that George would get to work on another Dynamite Disney series as Gargoyles ended, and here he is flexing his talents on another one of my favorite Disney IPs. All of the characters from the Hercules world look amazing in George’s art style. We don’t get to see a Kambadais Hades yet, but it is hinted in this issue that he will eventually make his grand appearance.

Elliott brings all of the same humor from the original Hercules movie into this comic as Hercules continues to be a true hero as a mortal while also trying to impress his famous dad, Zeus. In this first issue, you will see familiar characters like Hercules, Megara, Phil, Pegasus, and Zeus. Each of these characters have really strong personalities. Kallan nails the writing of these characters as the dialogue flows exactly like it would from these characters mouths, and you will find yourself reading the comic in their memorable voices. I Won’t Say (I’m in Love) with Megara, but I am. In this first issue, you will also meet new characters that you will enjoy: Aphrodite, Pygmalion, Galatea, and Eros.
