Review

Each story in this epic collection has a one page Once Upon a Mouse introduction with details of the original Disney classic animated short that is being retold in the future. Some of the story titles easily give away which animated short they are retelling, but here is the full list: Lonesome Ghosts (1937), Mickey’s Trailer (1938), Clock Cleaners (1937), Trailer Horn (1950), Mickey’s Firebrigade (1935), Boat Builders (1938), Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip (1940), and Thru the Mirror (1936). As you can see, that is quite a list of classic Disney animated shorts that are all effectively modernized into the 22nd Century.

Lonesome Ghosts is one of my favorite animated shorts. I was most excited to read Lonesome Ghosts in the Machine as a Once Upon a Mouse…in the Future story. I remember seeing writer Francesco Artibani tweet about this book when it was originally released in Italy. I wanted to read the Mickey, Donald, and Goofy ghost busting story, but I unfortunately do not speak Italian. I should have known that Fantagraphics would have me covered with releasing this collection in English the following year.

Classic Disney Animation fans will be entertained by these imaginative retellings of some of their favorite shorts.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Thank you to Fantagraphics for allowing us revisit some of our favorite Disney animated classics in these futuristic retellings.
