My Review

*STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID ALL SPOILERS*

We are defenders of the night. We are Gargoyles.

The story in this first Gargoyles Halloween issue is appropriately titled “Trick-Or-Treat”, and the events take place on Halloween night on October 31st, 1997. It is Brooklyn’s son Gnash’s first Halloween in Manhattan, and he really wants to go Trick-or-Treating. Halloween is the one day of the year when gargoyles can roam the city and be themselves without being noticed. Gnash’s Halloween costume of choice is Blackbeard the Pirate. A Gargoyles costumes are the most popular costume for the Halloween season. The kids that Gnash becomes friends with are all dressed as gargoyles. They believe that Gnash is dressed as a gargoyle dressed as a pirate.

Gnash has to temporary suspend his trick-or-treating when he finds out that there is a Quarrymen rally that is scheduled to go down at the party where the Manhattan Gargoyle Clan are planning to be. Bronx and Fu-Dog who were sent to shadow Gnash go with him to warn his family and friends. The pirate gargoyle with Bronx and Fu-Dog successfully take out all of the Quarrymen and save the gargoyle’s Halloween. I have to point out that Elisa Maza is dressed as Alice in Wonderland at the party. Two years ago she dressed as Belle and Goliath dressed as the Beast. Gnash’s trick-or-treating with his new friends may resume.

Diego Bonesso is the third Gargoyles illustrator to work on a Gargoyles Dynamite Comics title, and all three artists have nailed the look and feel of their Gargoyles assignments. Paired up with Greg Weisman and you got another authentic story in the Gargoyles saga experience.

Halloween is my favorite holiday so I obviously love that Gargoyles fans were treated to this bonus issue of Gargoyles to celebrate the season. Hopefully Gargoyles Halloween will be a new annual issue released. I also wouldn’t mind Gargoyles Christmas or Gargoyles Mardi Gras or Gargoyles Easter issues. Also, how about a Darkwing Duck Halloween issue…he likes to get dangerous on Halloween. I did get the Demona cover by Mirka Andolfo for this holiday issue. Demona was not in this issue. I wonder what her Halloween costume would be?

Happy Halloween!

Gargoyles Halloween #1 (Mirka Andolfo)

The Gargoyles animated series did get an excellent Halloween episode that takes place on Halloween in 1995, two years before this issue. The episode is titled “Eye of the Beholder” in case you want to watch it on Disney+.

This issue of Gargoyles has me hyped for the next issue of Dynamite Comics Gargoyles which is tentatively scheduled to be released October 25th, 2023. Also, please make sure to support Dynamite Comics Gargoyles: Dark Ages, Darkwing Duck, Negaduck, and Disney Villains Hades series while you are out buying Gargoyles.

Gargoyles fans…WE LIVE AGAIN!
