Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck in Les Misérables and War and Peace
Product Description
In the tradition of Mickey’s Christmas Carol and Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, master Disney comics writer/artists tackle wild retellings of great literature! It’s Victor Hugo… duckified!
When French gendarmeJavert thinks that poor Jean McJean (Scrooge McDuck) stole two candlesticks, he swears to run him down―even years later, when McJean has become town mayor and guardian of Daisette (Daisy Duck). Are the candlesticks the key to a fabulous treasure lost in Paris? And do the freres Beagle and Peg Leg Thénardier want it? (Silly question!) Then, in our version of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, Count Donald Dukzukov of ancient Russia loves Ducktasha Roastov (Daisy)―but Prince Scrooge McDukzukov wants to force him into an arranged marriage… or punish him in the McDukzukov Metalworks, where cannon balls are so pricey that you have to return them after the battle!

Review
Both of these duck adaptations were written and illustrated by Giovan Battista Carpi. Fantagraphics previously recognized Giovan Battista Carpi as a Disney Master in volume 6 (King of the Golden River) of their Disney Master series. This book includes supplemental pages about the original authors and original stories Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and War in Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
Again, we have great Disney comics from Italy that we would not have been exposed to if they were not translated and published by the good people at Fantagraphics. In The Secret of the Candlesticks, Scrooge tells the story of his French ancestor Jean McJean to his nephews. Scrooge, Daisy, Donald, Huey, Dewey, Louie, Pete, Trudy Van Tubb, John D. Rockerduck, and the Beagle Boys star in the tale spun from the classic Les Miserables. I have to shamefully admit that I have not read either of the original stories, but the stories and art in the duck adaptations made me interested in the original. I also was not required to read the 1200 page War and Peace in school, but I am sure that the prince in that one also hid his coins from the terrible Bolshoi Beagles in cannon balls. Disney Duck comic fans are going to love these fun and entertaining adaptations of classic books that I should have read already.
A big thank you to Fantagraphics for allowing us to go through this duckified Disney Comics journey.
