Review
Frenchmen writer Joris Chamblain and Ilatian illustrator Fabrizio Petrossi bring Disney Duck fans a charming tale of a young Scrooge McDuck from his Glasgow years. Young Scrooge is adorable and Petrossi’ artwork in this 52 page book is fantastic. The story is translated by Fantagraphics legend David Gerstein.
Scrooge earned his number one dime shining shoes on the streets of Glasgow in 1877. “The Dragon of Glasgow” story expands on those early Scrooge years. The tale begins in modern day Duckburg. Huey, Dewey, and Louie perform a play of the tale of the Dragon of Glasgow, and they ask Scrooge if he knows anything about the legend since he was also in Glasgow at the time of the dragon sighting in 1880. Scrooge left Glasgow on a ship to New Orleans at some point in 1880. Scrooge pretends to not recall any events of the dragon nor the young girl who discovered the dragon. The nephews turn to their next best source, Scrooge’s sister, Matilda. Matilda writes a letter back to the great nephews telling the tale of Scrooge and Matilda in their early Glasgow years. I love the illustrations done by Fabrizio Petrossi in this book of a young Scrooge and Matilda. We get to see Scrooge’s new love for acting as he meets Erin who is a young thespian at a local theater. Erin is a great new character for early Scrooge McDuck lore. It will ultimately be up to Scrooge and Erin to save the mines of Glasgow, but they are going to have to use their best acting skills.
