Be Prepared!!!!
Yeah we’ll be prepared…for what?
We are prepared for Dynamite Comics new Disney Villains series which has debuted with everyone’s favorite brotherly lion and monkey’s uncle….Scar. I am not lion when I say that Dynamite Comics is creating new comic content from all of my favorite Disney IPs like Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, and the Disney Villains. Those big three pretty much sum up my Disney personality.
Dark Horse Comics was planning a Disney Villains line of comics a few years back starting with the sea witch, Ursula. I was so hyped for that Disney Villains comic series and then later bummed out to find that the planned series was cancelled when Dark Horse no longer had the license. Dynamite Comics has revived the idea of a Disney Villains comic series with the launch of Disney Villains: Scar. Scar is easily a top three Disney Villain for me along with Captain Hook and Gaston, but there is a near infinite list of Disney Villains that I would love additional content. Maleficent has already been announced as the second Disney Villain to get their own Disney Villains comic series from Dynamite Comics. The villain is always the star of every Disney animated movie and without the villain, you would not have your hero or princess.
The Disney Villains: Scar miniseries will run for four issues.
Today, we will take a look at Disney Villains: Scar #3 published by Dynamite Comics.

My Review

The bones have spoken.
The Hyena Queen, “Queen Zahour”, has chosen a volunteer sacrifice for the hyenas feast. That “volunteer” is a familiar character that you will remember from The Lion King as Shenzi. It is revealed that Shenzi is the bone eating hyena that the vultures have taken Scar to the Elephant Graveyard to meet. Scar has to intervene to make sure that Shenzi and quite frankly himself are not on the menu for the hyena’s dinner feast. Scar makes a deal with Queen Zahour that he shall bring back food for all of the hyena and in exchange the hyena’s will form an army alliance with him. Also, Shenzi gets to live in this deal. Scar is assigned two more hyena helpers to bring back the food. Those two bone eaters just happen to be the two other hyenas that you know well from The Lion King, Banzai and Ed. I could hear all three hyena’s dialogue in their original voice actor’s voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings. Scar and his hyena trio go on the hunt in the Pride Lands for zebra, wildebeests, and antelope. The last comic page for this issue shows another Lion King alum flying above. This would be King Mufasa’s chief dodo, Zazu.
It was great to meet Queen Zahour in this issue as well as see some familiar character friends. This Dynamite Comics Disney Villains Scar series is delivering a very authentic backstory to lessons that Scar learns and pacts that he is able to make to reach his goal of becoming king of the Pride Lands. The Lion King has had it’s fair Lion share of animated sequels and prequels with The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, The Lion King 1/2, and The Lion Guard series. Don’t forget about The Lion King live action remake. This Disney Villains Scar comic series from the story and the amazing art work tops all of those other attempts to add more to the original animated classic The Lion King. Dynamite Comics Disney Villains Scar is the rightful king in that retrospect. I would definitely be on board with this comic series being adapted into animation as the high quality in the characters and illustrations are definitely a worthy successor.
I just can’t wait for the next issue of Disney Villains Scar which will be tentatively released July 12th, 2023. Unfortunately, the next issue will be the finale issue for this four issue Disney Villains Scar comic miniseries. Also, please make sure to support the Dynamite Comics Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, and Disney Villains Maleficent comic series while you are out buying Disney Villains Scar. You can also preorder the newly announced Dynamite Comics Disney Villains series debuting in August…Hades.
Previews Catalog has stated that a trade paperback/hardcover will not be available until late 2025. So you will definitely want to keep the love and support for the Disney Villains comic series going by purchasing the individual issues.
Practice your curtsy for the Pride Lands future King, and Be Prepared to feel the love for Dynamite Comics Disney Villains Scar.
