Funko Action Figure Review: Darkwing Duck

I am the terror that flaps in the night, I am the action figure that looks so good that you have to take it out of the package hence lowering its market value.

I AM DARKWING DUCK!

Continuing our series of reviews of the 1st wave of the Funko Disney Afternoon Action Figure line, we have the masked mallard and hero of St. Carnard, Darkwing Duck.

History of Darkwing Duck Action Figures

This Funko action figure release is not the first action figure for Darking Duck.  In 1991, the toy company Playmates released a series of Darkwing Duck action figures and accessories.  The action figure series included the following Darkwing Duck characters: Darkwing Duck, Gosalyn Mallard, Launchpad McQuack, Honker Muddlefoot, Bushroot, Steelbeak, Tuskernini, and Megavolt.  Playmates also released the Ratcatcher and Thunderquack vehicles to go along with their action figure line.  The coolest accessory toy in the Playmates Darkwign Duck line of toys was a replica of Darkwing Duck’s gas gun.  I do not own any of these figures, but I may pick some of them up off of eBay one day for nostalgia reasons.  If anybody would like to send some my way, please do. 😉

A series 2 of Playmates Darkwing Duck action figures was planned but were never released.  Series 2 would have added the following action figures to the collection: Morgana MacCawber, Gizmoduck, J. Gander Hooter, Chief Agent Gryzlikoff, Negaduck, Liquidator, Quackerjack, F.O.W.L Egg Man, Alien Hats, Penguin, and Darkwing Duck’s Quack Copter.  These figures were ultimately cancelled because Disney ended their licensing agreement with Playmates.

More information on the original line of Darkwing Duck action figures can be found on the Darkwing Duck Wiki page http://darkwingduck.wikia.com/wiki/Darkwing_Duck_(Playmates_Toys)

The Box Art

Just like the other action figures in the Funko Disney Afternoon action figure line, Darking Duck’s figure comes on a card that has amazing box art.  Collectors will have to decide whether or not they keep the figure mint on card or open the package for more diplay options.  I choose to open the packaging for my figure because that is how I roll.

The back of the box features an image of Darkwing Duck, Launchpad Mcquack, and Gosalyn Mallard along with a disclaimer that the toy is not recommended for ages 0-3.  The disclaimer is because Darkwing Duck comes with a gas gun accessory and could be a possible choking hazard.

The Figure

This colorful figure is a great representation of Darkwing Duck.  It has seven points of articulation including head, arms, elbows, and legs for high pose ability and movement.  I have no complaints on the paint job of this figure.  Darkwing Duck’s cape and hat are attached on this figure.  The original Playmates Darkwing Duck’s cape and hat were not attached to the figure.  A lot of eBay auctions for the original Playmates Darkwing Duck action figure do not include Darkwing’s hat and cape because they are often misplaced since they were not attached.  The gas gun accessory is a nice added bonus.  The gas gun is all black which differs slightly from the one on the show that was black and purple.

There is a chase Darkwing Duck figure with odds 1:6 to get the chase figure.  The fact that there is a Darkwing Duck chase figure has made this figure one of the hardest to find in the Funko Disney Afternoon Action Figure line due to collectors and toy retailers ordering more product to try to get the chase figure.  The chase Darkwing Duck figure is actually a character called Negatron.  Negatron was featured in 1 Darkwing Duck episode, and we will review that figure next week.

This is the third Darkwing Duck figure that was released by Funko last year.  The other three releases were POP! and Mystery Mini.  Here is a side by side comparison of those three figures.

I had a custom Darkwing Duck sign made to display with my figures.

Final Thoughts

Darkwing Duck is my favorite Disney character.  Not surprisingly, I highly recommend that you buy this figure.  I really hope that these figures sell well so that more characters can get added to the Funko Disney Afternoon line in the future.  Personally, I would love to see Funko add any of the Fearsome Five characters: Negaduck, Bushroot, Megavolt, Liquidator, and Quackerjack.  Which Darkwing Duck character would you like to see Funko add to this series of Disney Afternoon action figures line?

Where to Buy?

I have seen this figure range in price from $9.99-$12.99.

Darkwing Duck Funko action figure can be purchased in several online retailers and in stores.  Some of the stores that I have personally seen this Darkwing Duck figure include GameStop, Hot Topic, and ThinkGeek.
